As the Tiger offseason continues on ahead of the 2024 college football season, specific players are beginning to stand out among their peers. One such player is veteran LSU tight end Mason Taylor, who’s preparing for what could be a big-time junior year for the Florida product.
Veteran LSU tight end Mason Taylor is prepping himself for a monster junior season
The year is no longer 2022, and veteran LSU tight end Mason Taylor is no longer a bright-eyed freshman just trying to get a feel for the sport of college football. As we look ahead to the 2024 season, the talented junior is now being looked at as a leader on the team, and in turn, he’s going to be stepping into a very different role in the near future.
In fact, he already appears to be adjusting well, making big-time impressions on both his coaches and teammates this offseason. Earlier this week, the Plantation, FL, product was named “Freak of the Week” – an honor awarded to Tigers who are willing to put in the extra work within the weight room, as well as the football field.
Becoming the most recent player to earn the title, Taylor joins a group that includes fellow standouts; wide receiver Kyren Lacy, offensive lineman Tyree Adams and defensive lineman Paris Shand as the most recent honorees.
As we look ahead to Mason Taylor in the 2024 season, there’s little doubt he’ll be looking forward to an opportunity at plenty of production, being one of the more seasoned pass catchers on the roster. Over his two seasons with the purple and gold, he’s made appearances in 26 of 27 possible games, recording 74 receptions for 762 yards and four touchdowns.
Notably, his best performance thus far also happened to be his most recent, as he caught seven passes for 88 yards in a win over Wisconsin in the 2024 ReliaQuest Bowl on New Year’s Day.
Good is not good enough in 2024
While the win over the Badgers in their 2024 bowl game was undoubtedly a big one, for many players returning, it didn’t feel as satisfying as they might have liked. Boasting the best offense in college football during the 2023 season, LSU had the potential to make a serious run in the postseason, but unfortunately three regular season losses slowed things down in a major way.
Still, as we look ahead to Taylor’s junior season, it seems as though the roster is going through a bit of a mentality shift. Already, several players have come out and expressed an interest in vast improvement.
In the words of both the veteran LSU tight end and new starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, “Good is not good enough.”
In each of the first two seasons under relatively new head coach Brian Kelly, the Tigers have won 10 games, consistently showing an ability to reach double-digits. While for most programs, 10 wins would classify as an excellent season, LSU isn’t most programs, and it appears as though this team is well aware of it.
If the purple and gold plan on achieving that 11th and maybe even 12th win this year, keep an eye out for Mason Taylor. He’s going to play a major role in this year’s offense and the better he does, the better the team as a whole will likely do.
