Continuing on what’s been a largely impressive 2025 campaign up to this point, head coach Jay Johnson and his LSU baseball squad have officially taken over for Texas A&M as the No. 1 team in college baseball, according to the latest top 25 from D1Baseball.

LSU baseball replaces Texas A&M as No. 1 overall in latest 2025 D1Baseball top 25

With the fall of one team is bound to be the rise of another, regardless of the sport, and today, LSU baseball was the beneficiary of a significant stumble from preseason No. 1 overall Texas A&M.

Entering the week as a group that was pretty widely viewed as one of the top teams in all of college baseball, the Aggies, under first-year head coach Michael Earley, had everything going their way. Unfortunately, that No. 1 overall spot holds quite a bit of weight, and it might have just been a little too much for this squad, as they ended up losing four straight games from Sunday, February 23, through Saturday, March 1, against Cal Poly (5-6), Texas State (7-4), Arizona (7-4), and No. 25 Oklahoma State (6-4).

The bad news? Well, the Aggies took quite a fall in the latest D1Baseball top 25, dropping all the way to No. 14 with a current record of 6-4.

That said, it’s not all bad, as they no longer have that pressure of being the No. 1 team in the sport. Instead, head coach Jay Johnson and LSU baseball now have claim to that title, as the Tigers made the jump from No. 2 to No. 1 Monday morning, after boosting their record to 11-1, with wins over Nicholls State (5-7), No. 21 Dallas Baptist (8-3), Kansas State (6-5), Nebraska (4-6) and Sam Houston (2-9).

Alongside the purple and gold, the SEC is once again well represented in the latest edition of the 2025 D1Baseball top 25. As of today, 12 of the 16 teams in the conference are officially ranked, while Mississippi State just barely missed out.

Important to note is that Jay Johnson and his squad are by no means the run away No. 1 overall team. As of right now, D1Baseball is the only ranking to slot the Tigers at the top of their list, while the NCBWA has them as low as No. 4 overall.

With five of the top 25 remaining undefeated up to this point – including Tennessee, Oklahoma and Alabama of the SEC – the purple and gold have their work cut out for them if they have any plans of holding onto their standing as the top team in college baseball. Fortunately, it’s a long season, and having already stumbled once last weekend against Omaha (3-8), it’s pretty clear that one game won’t exactly ruin your season.

LSU baseball will next take to the diamond on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, as they get set to host North Dakota State for what will be a two-game series in Alex Box Stadium.
