As we find ourselves a bit over a week into the 2025 college season, head coach Jay Johnson has LSU baseball moving in a very positive direction, officially sitting at No. 2 overall in the latest D1Baseball top 25 rankings.
LSU baseball lands at No. 2 overall in latest 2025 D1Baseball top 25
The days of flashy, big hitting offenses under head coach Jay Johnson may officially be over. Instead, fans may need to start getting used to efficient, small ball offenses that are known for getting players not only on-base, but all the way home through the usage of bunts and stealing.
Throughout this past offseason, coach Johnson spent significant time hinting at this, but there was no way to truly say what to expect until we actually saw it in action. This was especially true when considering the fact that slugging first baseman Jared Jones remains on roster after leading the Tigers in home runs in 2024.
That said, as we ourselves seven full games in the 2025 campaign, it would appear that the purple and gold head man was telling the truth, and thus far, it seems to be working. Through just over a week of college baseball, the purple and gold have officially moved up from the preseason rankings, most recently coming in at No. 2 overall in the latest D1Baseball top 25.
Currently sitting with a 6-1 overall record – with their only loss coming in a 4-5 outing versus Omaha over the weekend – LSU baseball ranks just 147th nationally in home runs per game, hitting five in their first seven matchups. Important to note, this doesn’t reflect even slightly on how they’ve done offensively as a whole.
While they might not be going for the flashy one hit runs, they do sit among the highest scoring teams in college baseball, averaging 9.3 runs per game, good enough for 31st in the country.
Thus far, the small ball style that head coach Jay Johnson has been looking for has been more than good enough through non-conference play. Now, it’s just a matter of waiting to find out if that consistency can continue as SEC competition is officially just a few short weeks away.
