The Tiger passing game is going to look vastly different in 2024 when compared to these past two seasons. Not only is LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels off to the NFL, but so are their top two pass catchers, Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. In turn, some less experienced veterans will be relied on this season, including veteran LSU football wide receiver Kyren Lacy, who was recently named āFreak of the Week.ā
Veteran LSU football wide receiver impressing in winter training
The standard has officially been set at the wide receiver position under coach Brian Kelly. During the 2023 season, the Tigers not only had a pass catcher lead the country in receiving yards (Malik Nabers), but they had another take the prize in receiving touchdowns (Brian Thomas Jr).
Now, with both Nabers and Thomas Jr making their way to the next level as potential first round selections in the 2024 NFL draft, there are some big-time shoes to fill heading into this coming season.
While no one exactly expects to repeat this past yearās excellence, the Tigers certainly have the potential to make some noise with their group of wide receivers.
Among the many high-potential players they have on roster are transfer portal addition CJ Daniels and speedster Chris Hilton Jr, both of which figure to make a significant impact. Still, one player who could end up seeing action as the No. 1 option is veteran LSU football wide receiver Kyren Lacy.
Having recorded 54 receptions for 826 yards and seven touchdowns in two seasons with the Tigers, heās shown promise, but hasnāt had his breakout moment yet. Heading into 2024, however, it seems as though heās on a mission, having earned āFreak of the Weekā earlier today.
With this recognition, Lacy has officially become the third player of the offseason to earn the name āFreak of the Week.ā Notably, heās the first skill position player to be honored, as defensive lineman Paris Shand and offensive lineman Tyree Adams were the first two selections.
2024 outlook for Kyren Lacy
Lacy, a former transfer portal addition out of Louisiana Lafayette is in the midst of preparation for his fifth season of college football. Over the course of his career, heās proven to be a relatively consistent producer, totaling 104 catches for 1,494 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Interestingly enough, heās never fully been a number one option in an offense, but that very well could be changing as we look ahead to 2024.
Right now, there are three major candidates to keep an eye on for starting snaps. Transfer portal addition CJ Daniels out of Liberty is the early favorite to take over as the No. 1 option, but lack of experience within the LSU offense could slow him down slightly.
In turn, veterans Chris Hilton Jr and Kyren Lacy are some names to remember. Most recently, the pair took over for the Tigers in the recent bowl game vs. Wisconsin and excelled.
Totaling nine receptions for 151 yards and a touchdown, they ultimately showed no trouble in being the guys in charge within the pass catching room.
Who ends up earning the No. 1 option role is yet to be seen ahead of the 2024 season. Still, after earning āFreak of the Week,ā and with the way Kyren Lacy has put in work thus far, heās most certainly making his case to at the very least see a hefty dose of opportunity.
