Officially one full month into the 2025 LSU football offseason, head coach Brian Kelly has been hard at work. Along with solidifying an impressive recruiting and transfer portal haul for this coming season, he’s also been working on completing his coaching staff, most recently being expected to add former Florida State offensive coordinator Alex Atkins as a tight ends coach.
LSU football set to hire former Florida State offensive coordinator Alex Atkins to its offensive coaching staff
After spending the last four years working under Florida State head coach Mike Norvell, fast-rising offensive coach Alex Atkins is now expected to make his way to Baton Rouge, LA.
Having first began his career at UT-Martin as a graduate assistant, Atkins has always been known for his work with an offensive line. Earning the title of offensive line coach at the wide majority of his stops, including Itawamba Community College, Chattanooga, Georgia Southern, Tulane, Charlotte and most recently Florida State, it’s typically a safe assumption that his main thing will always be working with offensive linemen.
However, assuming Atkins does ultimately end up with LSU football, he’ll instead likely be throwing things all the way back to 2008, when he served as the tight ends coach for UT-Martin.
Earlier this offseason, the 2024 Tiger tight ends coach, Slade Nagle, received something of a promotion, as Houston head coach Willie Fritz officially brought him on as offensive coordinator for the Cougars.
In turn, Brian Kelly is in the midst of dealing with that hole on his roster, and according to Wilson Alexander of The Advocate, it can largely be expected that Alex Atkins takes that spot, along with the run game coordinator spot.
Atkins – barring any last minute changes – will join a 2025 offensive coaching staff that includes the likes of offensive coordinator Joe Sloan, running backs coach Frank Wilson, wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton, offensive line coach Brad Davis, and a slew of offensive analysts.
