There is no more debating. LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels has been the most outstanding player in college football for the 2023 season. After leading his team to a 9-3 overall record and putting up historic numbers all year, the star signal caller has officially been named the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner.
Quarterback Jayden Daniels becomes third LSU football player to win the Heisman Trophy
Sometimes, it’s simply a matter of not overthinking things. Whether simply looking at stats, or taking the time to watch him play, there’s no denying who has been the most incredible player in college football through 2023.
Quarterback Jayden Daniels went into the offseason on a mission. Many weren’t even sure if he would start this year. Entering this season, redshirt sophomore Garrett Nussmeier looked to be pushing the star quarterback, having shown significant improvement over the last few years.
Still, the 5th-year senior out of San Bernardino, CA, never gave in, and it ended up paying off in a major way. Spending plenty of time this past summer working on his deep ball passing, he quickly became one of the best passers in the country, if not the best.
With his hard work, he went ahead and put together by far the best season of his career. Completing 72.2 percent of his passes, he would go on to throw the ball for 3,812 yards and 40 touchdowns.
Still, being one of the best quarterbacks in the country wasn’t enough for him. Further pushing his resume over the top, he turned out to be one of the premier runners in college football, regardless of position.
In addition to having the most successful passing season of his career, he had his best year as a runner. Averaging 8.4 yards per carry, he’d go on to amass 1,134 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. He truly had one of the most incredible seasons anyone has ever seen at the college level.
Securing the 2023 Heisman Trophy, quarterback Jayden Daniels became the third LSU football player in program history to claim the prestigious award. Running back Billy Cannon was the first, earning the trophy in 1959. Sixty years later, in 2019, the honor went to current Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, making him the second Tiger to win.
Now, Tiger fans can rest easy, as quarterback Jayden Daniels is bringing the award back to the bayou. Two Heisman Trophy winners in five years is something very few programs have ever been able to accomplish, but now, LSU football can proudly claim to be one of them.
