Following yesterday’s flip commitment from wide receiver Phillip Wright III over Big Ten powerhouse Michigan, the LSU football recruiting class of 2025 continues to dominate in-state and now has a nearly complete pass catching group in the cycle.

LSU football recruiting flips former Michigan wide receiver commitment

The future of Tiger football just got a whole lot faster.

Brian Kelly and his coaching staff first offered class of 2025 wide receiver Phillip Wright III on January 27, 2024, and while it certainly stood out as a potential landing spot, the speedy pass catcher wasn’t exactly sold on staying in-state.

Instead, following an official visit with the reigning national champion Michigan football team in June, he elected to commit with the Big Ten powerhouse and it looked like his recruitment was as good as over. At least, that was until a little less than one month later when LSU track and field went ahead and extended an offer as well, sweetening the deal a bit for the purple and gold.

As it would turn out, this might have been all the Louisiana-based wide receiver needed. Just one week following the second Tiger offer, Wright III announced his decommitment from the Wolverines and just a few days later, he has officially flipped his pledge to coach Brian Kelly and his squad.

Listed at 5-foot-11, 170 pounds, the Destrehan High School standout won’t exactly “wow” you with his size, but that’s not exactly the reason that the purple and gold extended an offer to him in multiple sports. Instead, it’s his speed that has so many programs impressed, and it’s not just the track speed, but rather the way it translates to the football field.

With a verified 100-meter time of 10.46 to go along with a 200 of 21.41 seconds, he has the potential to come into college as one of the fastest players on the entire LSU football team, and this should have Tiger fans very excited for the future of their program. Paired up with fellow speedsters Jelani Watkins and running back Caden Durham from the class of 2024, explosiveness shouldn’t be a weakness on offense at any point moving forward.

The LSU football recruiting class of 2025 now ranks No. 3 nationally, as well as No. 2 in the SEC with 21 total commitments. Furthermore, now sitting with three wide receivers committed, expect focus to start shifting to future cycles as they look to get a head start on what has the potential to be a truly elite class of 2026 group.
