The Tigers are looking to make some serious changes on the defensive side of the ball and bringing in some talent through the transfer portal could be one way in which they do it. One player to keep an eye on is Louisiana-based defensive back Amorion Walker, who announced his intent to transfer from Michigan earlier today.
Louisiana-based defensive back Amorion Walker to transfer away from Michigan
Depth quickly became a serious issue for the LSU defensive backfield throughout the 2023 season. In fact, by week 13, several freshman ended up earning starting roles after several players ended up sidelined for various reasons.
Naturally, coach Brian Kelly hopes to turn things around in a major way going forward, and heās already begun to take steps in the right direction. Among the moves heās made thus far include a complete overhaul of the defensive staff and nine new additions to the secondary.
However, more could still be done, and one player to watch is Louisiana-based defensive back Amorion Walker, who announced his decision to transfer from Michigan earlier today.
Walker, a 6-foot-4, 175-pound defensive back out of Ponchatoula, LA, has been a major focus of conversation over the last year or so when it comes to high-upside in college football. After beginning his collegiate career as a wide receiver, he later made the transition over to the defensive side of the ball.
Unfortunately, despite Michigan being high on him throughout the offseason, it never translated to consistent playing time with the Wolverines. Through the 2023 season, the sophomore recorded just three tackles and one pass defended.
Now, as he looks ahead to his junior season, the former three-star recruit will look for a new home, and if coach Brian Kelly elects to continue bringing players back to the Boot, Amorion Walker could be a name to keep an eye on.
A look into the current state of the LSU defensive backfield
As things stand, itās not as though the Tigers are hurting for potential in their defensive backfield, but rather itās a matter of getting something to stick. Several players ā namely at the safety position ā are set to return for LSU in 2024, including freshman Jordan Allen, junior Major Burns, sophomore Sage Ryan and many others.
Even better, coach Brian Kelly will bring in nine new additions, with three transfers already committed to the purple and gold. Still, only a small portion of the talent expected to be on roster has extensive experience, which could prove to be an issue down the line.
In turn, thereās really no such thing as too much depth at those positions right now. Having a solid group of talented and hungry players is how you get improvement, while continuing to have many options on who could ultimately start next season.
While itās not necessarily a major need, per se, bringing in one more high-potential cornerback such as Amorion Walker could end up being big for the Tigers. This is especially true when you consider his 6-foot-4, 175-pound frame. If he hits as a defensive back, the Louisiana product has the ability to compete athletically with some of the best receivers in the SEC.
For now, though, LSU sits steady with five transfer portal commitments, putting them at No. 10 nationally for the overall class of 2024.
