Big changes are coming to the Tiger coaching staff ahead of the 2024 season. After putting together a rough showing all around throughout 2023, coach Brian Kelly will reportedly overhaul his entire LSU football defensive staff.

A complete overhaul expected for LSU football defensive staff ahead of 2024

Just about nothing went right for the LSU Tigers on the defensive side of the ball in 2023. Ranking No. 78 in scoring defense (28 points allowed per game) and No. 105 in total defense (416.6 yards allowed per game) it was truly a miracle that the Tigers were able to put together yet another 10-win season.

However, coach Brian Kelly understands that things simply weren’t good enough on the defensive side of the ball. He wants to bring the purple and gold back to its championship ways, and playing better defense will need to be a part of it.

In response, the Tiger head coach has elected to do a complete overhaul of the LSU football defensive staff. This means the program has now parted ways with defensive coordinator Matt House, safeties coach Kerry Cooks, cornerbacks coach Robert Steeples and defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey.

Kelly first began discussing changing things up prior to their ReliaQuest Bowl appearance vs. Wisconsin, but planned on waiting until after the bowl season to make anything official.

While it’s understandable that the Tiger head coach wanted to keep some continuity, it’s notable that the defense nearly prevented LSU from reaching a 10th win in 2023.

The Badgers, despite struggling mightily on offense throughout the season, managed to put up 31 points on the day, all while gaining 506 yards of total offense.

With today’s report, expect to see plenty of new hires over the coming weeks. For coach Brian Kelly, his new defensive coaching staff hires could be one of the most important things he’s done since arriving in Baton Rouge.
