Last night, the College Football Playoff committee released its 2023 week 11 rankings. Once again, despite their three losses, coach Brian Kelly and LSU football remain in high regard, landing at No. 15 overall.
College Football Playoff: LSU football lands at No. 15 overall
Coach Brian Kelly and the Tigers have endured quite a gauntlet through the 2023 season. So far on their schedule, they’ve faced four top-15 teams, falling against No. 13 Ole Miss, No. 8 Alabama and No. 4 Florida State, while beating No. 9 Missouri.
Unfortunately, this has led to a 7-3 overall record, which normally would mean the season is over with a trip to the SEC Championship and the College Football Playoff no longer an option.
However, with the strength of their schedule, the committee still respects coach Brian Kelly and the Tigers, explaining their continued ranking as the best three-loss team in the country.
Last week, LSU football fell to No. 19 after a tough loss to Alabama. With a jump of four this week, things are again starting to move in favor of the purple and gold.
With two more potential wins on the schedule, a top-10 finish is not out of the cards
After losing to Alabama, many questioned whether LSU football would check out for the remainder of the 2023 season. Often, without a chance at the College Football Playoff, it’s hard for some teams to stay motivated. However, the Tigers still have plenty to push for.
The big thing that should continue to grab headlines for the remainder of the college football season is quarterback Jayden Daniels. This is almost certainly his final year with the Tigers, and he is one of the top candidates for the Heisman Trophy race.
A motivator that might not grab as many headlines is that a top-10 finish is very much in the realm of possibilities for coach Brian Kelly and his team.
This weekend, they’ll face off against Georgia State in what should be a relatively easy win. After that, they’ll host the Texas A&M Aggies for the final game of the regular season.
With how things have been moving for them so far, we could see significant jumps over the next couple of weeks. If a top-10 team or two suffers a loss along the way, it would only assist in their chances of sneaking in with some elite company.
