Through 10 weeks, LSU football quarterback Jayden Daniels has been absolutely electric. We’re yet to see a defense fully figure out how to stop him, and even some of his teammates don’t fully understand how he does certain things on the football field. During Tuesday’s media availability, offensive lineman Charles Turner III spoke about the star quarterback and his race for the Heisman.
Quarterback Jayden Daniels remains one of the top candidates for the Heisman Trophy
As things stand, the Heisman Trophy is a four-man race heading into week 12 of college football. Among those four are Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr, Oregon quarterback Bo Nix, Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr and LSU football quarterback Jayden Daniels.
For obvious reasons, most of his Tiger teammates believe that Daniels deserves the prestigious award. Still, when asked about it on Tuesday, offensive lineman Charles Turner III took a step further.
“I’m not trying to focus on awards and stuff right now,” the Tiger offensive lineman said during media availability. “We’re just trying to finish out the season strong and do what we can do, but in my eyes, I don’t think there’s a better player in the country than Jayden Daniels.”
By definition, the Heisman Trophy is designed to be annually awarded to the most outstanding player in college football. While this may still technically be true, it’s become much more of a statistical award in recent years.
Still, regardless of which direction you take the trophy, Daniels has an excellent argument to be the No. 1 candidate through 10 games.
So far, in 2023, the Tiger signal-caller has recorded 3,164 yards and 30 touchdowns through the air. While those numbers alone stack up with some of the best in the country, his running ability puts him over the top. On just 114 carries, he’s recorded 918 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 8.1 yards per carry.
Offensive lineman Charles Turner III gives an amazing description of Daniels as a runner
In Saturday’s win over Florida, quarterback Jayden Daniels put on a performance that looked awfully close to what many would describe as a “Heisman moment.”
On the day, he recorded over 600 yards from scrimmage to go along with five touchdowns. However, his most impressive play came midway through the second quarter, as he ran 85 yards for a one-play touchdown.
“The 85-yarder, really, I tried to chase him and catch him, and then I got to a certain point where I realized I wasn’t catching him,” offensive lineman Charles Turner said with a smile during Tuesday’s media availability.
“He kind of runs like a gazelle,” the senior offensive lineman added. “You ever seen a gazelle being chased by lions and cheetahs? He kind of just gallops away and just glides. It’s crazy. It’s unmatched.”
No matter what animal you would describe quarterback Jayden Daniels as, there’s no denying the way he glides and slips past defenders week in and week out.
You can catch the star signal-caller continue to add to his Heisman resume this weekend at Tiger Stadium, as LSU football will take on Georgia State on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. CST.
