Signing day flips have widely come to be expected in today’s world of college football, and LSU is certainly no exception to the rule, as three-star tight end Mike Tyler announced his decision to stay home and join the South Carolina football program Wednesday afternoon.

Last second flip commitments have become an annual tradition on college football national signing day, and LSU football just received its first of the day.

Three-star tight end Mike Tyler first announced his commitment to LSU football on August 17, 2024, and for several reasons, it was a big-time pickup for Brian Kelly and his class of 2025 group. Not only were they able to steal the 6-foot-3, 230-pound recruit from his home state of South Carolina, but thanks in large part to his elite hands and playmaking ability, it felt like they found something of a diamond in the rough.

With that said, once the fall hit, things began trending in a different direction, ultimately leading up to today’s signing day flip commitment to the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Rated as a three-star recruit, and the No. 549 player nationally, according to the 247Sports Composite, Tyler’s flip commitment to the Gamecocks didn’t come off as too big of a surprise, as he took several visits to the in-state football program over the last few months.

In the midst of the first day of the early signing period, the LSU football class of 2025 currently rests with 17 total signatures, with many more expected before the sun ultimately sets later this evening. With 23 total commitments, the purple and gold have slipped to No. 9 nationally, as well as No. 6 in the SEC after being ranked within the top-two just a few months ago.
