LSU baseball is officially one of the two best teams in college baseball. Having officially made it to the College Baseball World Series Finals, the Tigers shift their attention to Florida. In a recent press conference ahead of the matchup, Florida coach Kevin O’Sullivan broke down the matchup and said some encouraging things about LSU baseball star Tre Morgan.
Florida coach Kevin O’Sullivan gives rave review about LSU baseball star Tre Morgan
Ahead of the College Baseball World Series Finals matchup between Florida and LSU, Gators coach Kevin O’Sullivan took some time to speak to the media. While answering questions, he had some interesting tidbits regarding LSU baseball star Tre Morgan.
You never know what to expect when a coach speaks about an opposing team’s player. With O’Sullivan, however, he had some incredible things to say about Morgan, even joking about how excited he was to see him head off to the next level.
“Yeah, I think I’ve seen enough of Tre. I’m ready for Tre to move on to the next level,” O’Sullivan said, cracking a smile.
To say he sounded excited to see him move on to the next level would be an understatement. As much as Tigers fans hope Morgan will stay another season, O’Sullivan likely hopes he’ll move on. After all, the longer he stays in Baton Rouge, the longer O’Sullivan will have to worry about coaching against him.
You can listen to the rest of the Florida baseball coach’s comments on LSU baseball star Tre Morgan below:
Morgan had one of the best plays of the season versus Wake Forest
In his press conference, he referenced a play that occurred Thursday night as the Tigers beat Wake Forest.
It was the top of the eighth inning, and the Demon Deacons were threatening to score. They had men on first and third, with only one out. That meant a sacrifice bunt would likely be on the way to help get the third base runner in for the game’s first score.
Tre Morgan and coach Jay Johnson had other plans. The bunt came, but rather than it leading to the first score of the day, it turned into one of the greatest defensive plays of the season.
Morgan left first base to catch the bunt off the bounce and flipped it over to the catcher Alex Milazzo. Milazzo caught it and tagged the incoming runner before he could touch home.
That very play may have saved the game for LSU baseball. The Tigers would go on to win it in the bottom of the 11th inning with a walk-off home run from Tommy White.
Florida baseball on the clock
With their victory on Thursday night, the Tigers will face Florida baseball in the College Baseball World Series Finals. It’s a matchup for the ages, as the in-conference foes have been going at it all season long.
The two teams are yet to face each other this season, bringing the anticipation to a boil. There have been constant talks about which team is better, which has the better star players – which team has a better shot at a national championship.
The stars have officially aligned, though, as later this evening, the two teams will face each other for the first time this season. The series will be best two out of three, and the outcome could come down to pitching.
Outside of Paul Skenes, the Tigers have struggled in the pitching department all season. Still, none of that matters anymore; it just matters how they do in the present. The pitching group has been electric most of the post-season, pulling LSU baseball to some much-needed wins.
In 2017, the Tigers faced off against Florida baseball for the College Baseball World Series Finals, when the Gators won it all. Now, in 2023, the matchup is back, and the opening game will begin at 6:00 p.m. CST. Ahead of their game tonight, LSU baseball is almost certainly looking to put that 2017 loss behind them with a victory this weekend.
