Despite a less than ideal start to the 2025 transfer portal window, LSU football has just received some of the best news of its offseason, as quarterback Garrett Nussmeier will officially pass on the 2025 NFL Draft and return for his fifth and final season of college football.

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier announces return for fifth season of college football

Coach Brian Kelly and the 2025 LSU football team just received some of the best news of the offseason, as veteran quarterback Garrett Nussmeier will officially be making his return for his fifth season of college football.

It wasn’t long ago that Nussmeier was being talked about as potentially the top signal caller in the 2025 NFL Draft. Even despite entering just his first season as a full-time starter, many scouts had already fallen in love with his pocket mobility, as well as what could be one of the strongest arms in all of college football.

Still, the 2024 season didn’t exactly do him many favors in building up that already high stock. He didn’t have a bad season by any means, but 3,739 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions wasn’t exactly what he, or any NFL suitors had in mind for his first season as the head signal caller for the Tigers.

Additionally, with the purple and gold achieving a record of just 8-4 during the regular season, Nussmeier certainly wasn’t happy with the way things panned out in 2024.

Luckily for coach Brian Kelly and the LSU football program, that just so happened to be fantastic news for the 2025 roster, as they now have a talented veteran to lead an offense that will be looking to improve on a somewhat middling 2024 season from top to bottom.

As we stand today, just two Tigers have announced an early departure for the NFL, as offensive tackle Will Campbell and tight end Mason Taylor made their announcements earlier this offseason. While the losses are big, none would have been bigger than losing your starting quarterback, so for today, the program found itself a victory. Now. it’s just a matter of what that victory can do for the remainder of the 2024-25 offseason.
