LSU footballĀ has a significant need at the moment. While talent isnā€™t necessarily an issue, depth is reason for concern in the Tigersā€™ defensive backfield. Coach Brian Kelly is aware of this as he hasĀ hit the recruiting trailĀ in a major way regarding the safety and cornerback positions for the class of 2024. So far, it appears to be paying off in a major way as LSU football makes the top five for elite four-star safety Kaā€™Davion Dotson.

Tigers are a finalist for one of the best class of 2024 defensive backs in Texas

When Louisiana State UniversityĀ hired Brian Kelly to coach the football programĀ in 2021, he was faced with quite a challenge. That challenge was to essentially rebuild the defensive back group. Over the last two off-seasons, Kelly has brought in 10 defensive backs through the transfer portal.

While this method is becoming increasingly popular in todayā€™s version of college football, it isnā€™t sustainable. If you want to become a contender andĀ stay a contender for the college football playoff, high school recruiting needs to be a priority.

Now that coach Kelly has built up his roster a bit, his attention isĀ shifting toward the younger guys, and itā€™s paying off. Over the weekend, LSU football was named a finalist for elite safety prospect Kaā€™Davion Dotson.

Dotson isĀ rated a four-star recruit and the No. 236 player in the country. In addition, heā€™s rated as the No. 19 safety in the country, so heā€™s an elite talent that should make a difference on just about any school he chooses.

As things stand, LSU football isĀ the only SEC schoolĀ out of his top five. Along with the Tigers, Texas, SMU, TCU and Oklahoma State were all named finalists.

If the purple and gold can secure his commitment, this would be huge for Brian Kelly. Not only would it display his ability to recruit the South, but also his ability to recruit the state of Texas, a state that consistently produces some of the best high school recruits in the country.

Can Brian Kelly seal the deal?

Anyone who followsĀ high school football and recruitingĀ is well aware of just how elite Texas football is. Just about every single Friday night is a holiday for the ā€˜Lone Star Stateā€™ because of how passionate they are about high school football.

So naturally, when you know how to recruit the state of Texas, youā€™reĀ recruiting at a high level. Thatā€™s precisely why itā€™s so important that LSU football appears to be in the lead to gain Dotsonā€™s talents.

According to 247Sports, 100 percent of crystal balls predict heā€™ll end up in Baton Rouge. In addition,Ā ON3Ā gives the Tigers a 90.3 percent chance of gaining his commitment.

If LSU football can win over his talents, not only would they be gaining an elite talent, but theyā€™d be increasing their pipeline into Texas. Thereā€™s plenty of time remaining for the class of 2024, but the Tigers are sitting well at the moment. This would be an incredible pick-up, and thereā€™s no doubt that four-star Kaā€™Davion Dotson wouldĀ look fantastic in the purple and gold.
