And just like that, coach Brian Kelly and the Tigers are beginning to make some moves. Just hours following starting defensive back Sage Ryan’s decision to transfer, LSU football has officially landed a commitment from SEC transfer portal safety Jardin Gilbert.

It’s been a relatively quiet transfer portal period for coach Brian Kelly and the Tigers. Several players have elected to leave the program, but we hadn’t seen much in terms of players coming in up to this point.

That was, until today when SEC transfer portal safety Jardin Gilbert elected to take his talents back to Baton Rouge this afternoon.

Gilbert, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound safety out of University Lab High School in Baton Rouge, LA, spent the first three seasons of his career playing for Texas A&M in College Station.

He’s proven to be largely productive as a playmaker for the Aggies, recording 79 tackles, six passes defended and two interceptions through his career. However, entering his fourth season, he’s elected to return home and play for the Tigers.

Ranking as the No. 50 overall transfer, and the No. 3 safety, this is a massive get for the purple and gold. Even more notable is the fact that just hours ago, LSU lost a big-time defensive back in redshirt sophomore Sage Ryan, who started for the defense this season.

This is transfer portal commitment No. 1 of the cycle, and plenty more is expected to come. For now, this is an impressive get for coach Brian Kelly and could prove pivotal for the Tiger defense in 2024.
