Today has been a tough day for the Tigers as it pertains to the transfer portal. Entering the day, just seven players were set to leave the program and look for a new home. Now, LSU football is up to nine outgoing transfers with offensive lineman Marlon Martinez and defensive lineman Quency Wiggins entering their names in the portal.
LSU football Defensive lineman Quency Wiggins becomes first Friday transfer portal loss
The expression âwhat ifâ often arises in discussions about players entering the transfer portal. For many, the portal becomes a career-changing move that can either propel them to the NFL or relegate them to the bench.
Over the years, LSU football has witnessed both scenarios, but memories of former Heisman winning quarterback Joe Burrow and current Heisman finalist Jayden Daniels often garner the most attention.
In 2023, the transfer portal has been open just five days now, but the Tigers have already seen quite a few players elect to leave Baton Rouge for a new home.
Today, the Tigers saw two former four-star linemen elect to transfer, with defensive lineman Quency Wiggins getting things started this morning.
As a member of the class of 2022, there was no doubt about the potential of the 6-foot-5, 265-pound Baton Rouge native. Ranked No. 48 nationally, he had his pick of schools and ultimately chose LSU over Florida and Alabama.
Unfortunately, this did not translate to much consistency on the football field. Through two seasons, he recorded just five tackles, with only two coming in 2023.
Offensive lineman Marlon Martinez brings total up to nine
Shortly after defensive lineman Quency Wiggins entered the transfer portal, offensive lineman Marlon Martinez elected to join him, bringing the total number of outgoing Tigers to nine within the first five days.
Martinez, a 6-foot-5, 330-pound lineman out of Fort Lauderdale, FL, has consistently contributed as a depth piece throughout his four seasons with the program. Notably, he has made 45 appearances for the Tigers, starting four times.
His versatility is a key factor that makes him intriguing as a prospect. The former four-star recruit is proficient in playing nearly any position along the offensive line, making him a potential impact player at his next destination.
Coming out of high school, Ohio State, Georgia, Florida, and Penn State were among the many schools interested in him, suggesting he may likely end up at another high-level program for the 2024 season.
