Coach Matt McMahon and the Tigers had their first exhibition of the 2023-24 season on Monday evening, and there were plenty of solid performances throughout the roster. One of the most impressive, however, was from LSU basketball sophomore forward Jalen Reed. Following the Tigers’ 132-44 victory, McMahon took some time to talk about Reed and his development.

LSU basketball sophomore Jalen Reed could be in store for a big 2023-24 season

Out of high school, four-star forward Jalen Reed undoubtedly had potential but was still raw. His frame, standing at 6-foot-9, 220 pounds, left plenty to like, so it felt like a year of college-level conditioning would be essential for the big man.

Now, after a development year in which he averaged just 3.7 points and 3.2 rebounds per game, it’s showtime.

Already, the LSU basketball sophomore looks like a completely different player, now standing at 6-foot-10, 242 pounds. In turn, he moves like a completely different player, too.

During Monday’s exhibition, he looked completely in control and seemed able to out-physical just about anyone on the Louisiana Christian roster.

On the day, he scored 11 points, going 4-for-4, adding five rebounds and two assists.

After the game’s conclusion, coach Matt McMahon went to the podium and sounded excited about the LSU basketball sophomore and his potential.

“I’m sure you probably noticed he looks a lot different than he did a year ago,” McMahon said about the star forward“About 6-10, 242 pounds, and it’s really been a huge step forward for him this offseason in his decision-making and limiting his turnovers. His turnover rate was way too high a year ago.”

“And then he’s really improved his finishing at the basket,” he continued. “And he’s just this unique player at 6-10, 240; with his perimeter skill level, you can put two other frontcourt guys out there on the floor with him and be effective.”

Even if he manages to double his stats from a year ago, it would be a huge jump in productivity for coach Matt McMahon and the Tigers. They’ll get another opportunity next week, as they’ll face Mississippi Valley State in Baton Rouge on November 6, 2023.
