When you’re looking to rebuild a program, it all starts with recruiting. You need both veterans and young talent to build a program, and coach Matt McMahon is working toward that. Recently, top class of 2024 four-star LSU basketball recruiting target Curtis Givens III discussed McMahon and what makes him so appealing from a coaching standpoint.

LSU basketball recruiting target Curtis Givens III discusses appeal of coach Matt McMahon

Coach Matt McMahon is entering his second season as the man up front for the men’s basketball program. For LSU fans, he might not be much more than a coach that led their team to a 14-19 overall record in 2022-23.

However, there’s so much more to the coach and his ability to develop. In fact, he was the man who helped to develop Ja Morant into one of the best point guards in basketball today.

That kind of development stands out to recruits, and for LSU basketball, it could pay off in a significant way. Recently, this month, class of 2024 four-star Curtis Givens III discussed McMahon with On3. He spoke about development, specifically at the point guard position, and how it appeals to him.

“Coach Matt (McMahon) has a history of developing great guards. When he was at Murray State, they had Ja Morant, and they had Cameron Payne. He’s a point guard coach who puts the ball in his point guard’s hands and lets them control the tempo.”

The elite LSU basketball recruiting target is the kind of player who would have no problem leading an offense. If he’s looking for development at the point guard position, there are few better than McMahon.

The Tigers appear to be the current favorites for the top class of 2024 point guard

Allow me to preface this with the fact that there’s still plenty of time remaining in this recruitment. Earlier this month, the class of 2024 four-star told On3 that he plans on committing before the early signing period, which takes place from November 8 until November 15 this year.

“As of right now, I’m planning to commit just a little before the early signing period,” the LSU basketball recruiting target said. “That could change, but that is where my mind is right now.”

This is excellent news for coach McMahon, as the Tigers appear to be one of the favorites to land the elite point guard.

When determining which schools to consider, Givens III talked about how he wants to make an immediate impact. This helps to explain why he’s giving the Tigers such a strong look, as Matt McMahon’s squad is very much in the midst of a rebuild.

“I want to go to a program where I can have an impact year one. I have to come in and do the work, but I want the opportunity to have the ball in my hands. I’m going to look at the team, I want to have good players around me. I want to win.”

According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, LSU basketball has a 44.2 percent chance of landing a commitment from Givens III. The only other team that comes close to the Tigers is Georgia Tech, who’s been given a 38.7 percent chance.

If coach Matt McMahon can find a way to land this four-star commitment, it could immediately change the outlook for LSU basketball. The class of 2024 target has elite scoring ability and is ready to come in and make an impact for his future team.
