Coach Kim Mulkey and the LSU women’s basketball put on yet another impressive exhibition performance tonight, beating Loyola (New Orleans) 121-36. Several Tigers stood out through the 40 minutes, but freshman Mikaylah Williams was one of the best. Here is what coach Mulkey said about the star youngster during the post-game presser.

LSU women’s basketball freshman Mikaylah Williams puts on a show vs. Loyola (New Orleans)

LSU women’s basketball freshman Mikaylah Williams is a star in the making. Yes, we’ve only seen her in exhibition formats, but it’s hard not to be impressed with what she’s done so far.

Last week vs. East Texas Baptist, she got the party started with a 10-point, eight-rebound performance. Naturally, she followed things up with an electric offensive showing, recording 20 points, three rebounds and three assists vs. Loyola (New Orleans).

Coach Kim Mulkey impressed, but sees room for improvement

One of the things that makes coach Kim Mulkey so good as a head coach is that she never gets too high or too low. She understands that there’s good and bad to the game of basketball, and most importantly, there’s always room for growth.

When speaking about the star freshman, Mulkey did precisely that, seeing her impressive performance and still understanding where she can improve.

“She can just score the ball,” Mulkey said when asked about Mikaylah Williams“She can shoot the three, she can score the mid-range shot, she can go in there with her body strength and get rebounds for you.”

However, it wasn’t all rainbows and sunshine. She is still a freshman, after all, and likely has plenty of high school habits to get out of her system.

“Defensively, I just think she gets better and better every day, and I have to just kind of keep reminding her – there are those moments where she wants to kind of coast cause she’s just better than everybody else in high school and summer ball. I don’t want you doing that here. I want to eliminate that span that you go, ‘I’m not gonna get in the passing lane right here,’ or ‘I’m gonna switch right here.'”

“Just staying after her, just staying after her and making her realize that you can really dominate on the defensive end of the floor as much as you can score and dominate on the offensive end. Just stay after her. She’s just talented, guys. She’s just talented.”

Coach Kim Mulkey is one of the very best in the business. With the talent and size that freshman guard Mikaylah Williams possesses, there’s no reason she can’t become a star for LSU women’s basketball. It’s just a matter of continuing to improve.

Coming out of high school, according to ESPN, Williams was listed as the No. 2 recruit in the class of 2023. So far, she’s looked the part and could find herself with plenty of minutes heading into the 2023-24 regular season.
