In the midst of a tough few weeks for coach Jay Johnson and the Tigers, the purple and gold are likely ready for the end of March to finally arrive. With that said, the 2024 struggles haven’t exactly hurt things as far as LSU baseball recruiting goes, as the program most recently landed a big-time JUCO transfer commitment from former Arizona infielder Trevor Schmidt.

Four. That’s how many games coach Jay Johnson and the Tigers have won since the start of SEC play on March 15, 2024.

After starting the season with a record of 16-2, things were looking good for an LSU baseball team that had high hopes coming off an electric national championship season in 2023. However, that’s about as good as it got for the purple and gold, as they’ve since followed things up with a 4-7 effort since the start of SEC play and are currently on a three game loss streak.

Still, even with the current struggles of the 2024 roster, it hasn’t exactly slowed things down from a recruiting standpoint. Earlier this week, the Tigers landed a big-time transfer commitment from JUCO infielder Trevor Schmidt.

Schmidt, a 6-foot-1, 225-pound first baseman for the Fullerton College Hornets has been about as impressive as you’ll find at the JUCO level thus far during the 2024 season. Recording 12 home runs and seven doubles through 28 games, it’s hard to find anyone more productive.

Interestingly enough, he’s no stranger to the Division I level either. Coming out of high school as the class of 2022 No. 500 player nationally, according to Perfect Game, the Anaheim Hills, CA, product began his career with the Arizona Wildcats before dropping down a level ahead of his true sophomore season.

While he might not be an immediate impact player from the moment he steps on campus in Baton Rouge, it’s not hard to see the potential from a batting perspective. With a season batting average of 0.339, he’s not necessarily the most efficient player out there, but with a slugging percentage of 0.783, he’s putting up comparable numbers to current Tiger junior Tommy White, the nation’s current leader in career home runs.

Schmidt is the first transfer portal addition set to join the Tiger class of 2024, but likely won’t be the last. Expect plenty more action as the LSU baseball season slowly comes to a close over the next few months.
