Final look at LSU women’s basketball March Madness projections ahead of Selection Sunday

After most recently falling to South Carolina in the SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament Championship, the 2024 LSU women’s basketball team will find out their next opponent later this evening during Selection Sunday. Here is a final look into the Tigers’ March Madness projection before we finally learn of the official seeding.

It’s been a wild ride for the 2024 LSU women’s basketball team

The future of the 2024 LSU women’s basketball team is just hours away from being officially mapped out. After a largely up and down season throughout the year for the Tigers, coach Kim Mulkey and her squad are finally getting healthy and have an opportunity to show what they’ve been building towards in the upcoming NCAA Women’s March Madness.

The team started the year with an impressive nine player rotation, showing the depth coach Mulkey has been working on over the last two seasons. Unfortunately, after a string of injuries and off-court issues, that number quickly dropped to seven, and depth was no longer a strength for the purple and gold.

Still, they managed to stay mostly healthy throughout the year, eventually making it to a 28-5 record which included a trip to the SEC Championship.

Unfortunately, the long season did eventually show its teeth, and the Tigers were essentially forced to limp to the finish line. Among the many ailments facing the squad towards the end of the SEC Tournament included lower-body injuries for both forward Angel Reese and guard Mikaylah Williams, as well as a scary concussion for Last-Tear Poa.

With all of that said, the team has been given an opportunity to rest and stay healthy over the last week or so, which could mean trouble for the rest of the NCAA March Madness bracket. Now, it’s just a matter of waiting to find out who they will eventually face in the first round.

A final look at the Tigers’ March Madness Projection

As we stand with just hours remaining until the final announcements, the LSU women’s basketball team almost looks like a lock for a No. 2 seed. If anything, it’s just a matter of which region they end up in and who will surround them.

After ending the season at No. 8 nationally, according to the Associated Press, it doesn’t appear they lost any ground after falling in their most recent matchup against undefeated South Carolina.

As far as a March Madness projection goes, both ESPN’s Charlie Creme and Her Hoop Stats’ Megan Gauer had the purple and gold as a No. 2 seed. Interestingly enough, the pair also had the Tigers making it into one of the two Portland regions, with Cameron Brink and the Stanford Cardinal listed as the No. 1 seed.

In all honesty, the main difference between the two projections were who they had the Tigers playing in the first round. While ESPN has them facing off against the SWAC Champion Jackson State squad, Her Hoop Stats gave them Southern Conference Champion Chattanooga.

The official NCAA Women’s March Madness Selection Show will take place this evening, March 17, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. CST and will be available to watch live on ESPN.
