Coach Brian Kelly has spoken candidly about his desire to build a championship caliber roster and coaching staff since the moment he stepped in as the head coach of LSU football. While he isn’t quite where he needs to be yet, the upcoming recruiting cycle may just get him there. Today, it was reported that five-star class of 2025 safety target DJ Pickett will take a visit to Baton Rouge this next week.

No one is recruiting the class of 2025 better than coach Brian Kelly and LSU football. There’s really no argument about it either, as the Tigers currently sit at No. 1 nationally with seven four-star or better commitments already.

Even more impressive is that they aren’t anywhere near done. The purple and gold are still targeting several top players, many of which have earned a five-star rating.

One such player is class of 2025 safety target DJ Pickett, who will visit Baton Rouge on January 30, as reported by Chad Simmons of On3.

Almost unsurprisingly at this point, Pickett rates as a five-star recruit, and a top-10 player nationally. According to On3, the 6-foot-3, 170-pound safety sits at No. 6 in the country, as well as No. 1 both at his position and in the state of Florida.

Interestingly enough, last month, the five-star safety recruit named his top-five of Alabama, Georgia, Miami, Michigan and Oregon. There were several notable absences, but with his upcoming visit to LSU, it’s clear that the Tigers aren’t out of it yet, even despite the lack of purple and gold in his top choices.

Several No. 1 positional recruits already committed to the Tigers

DJ Pickett isn’t the first No. 1 overall positional recruit coach Brian Kelly and LSU has targeted. In fact, the Tigers already have three committed to play in Baton Rouge, all of which are on the offensive side of the ball.

First it was wide receiver Dakorien Moore, who has now been committed to the program for over five months. Then, the new year got off to a hot start, as both running back Harlem Berry and quarterback Bryce Underwood announced their pledges.

With all of that talent set to join them on offense, it’s a fair assumption that some serious defensive recruiting could be on the horizon.

Furthermore, the Tigers completely overhauled their defensive coaching staff just in the last month. If they play their cards correctly, things could move in a very positive direction for the LSU defense as we head into the 2024 college football season.
