We’re officially in the home stretch for the highly-anticipated EA Sports College Football 25 video game and seemingly every day, new information is being released about what fans can expect. Most recently, Matt Brown of Extra Points reported that there will be multiple cover athletes – all of which are current players and compete in various Power Four conferences. With that, here are three current LSU football players – starting with quarterback Garrett Nussmeier – who would make excellent cover athletes for the soon to be released game.
LSU players who would make for excellent EA Sports College Football 25 cover athletes
Senior QB Garrett Nussmeier
When it comes to the face of this year’s LSU football roster, senior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is about as good an example as any. After sitting on the bench for the past three seasons in anticipation of his time to shine, his moment has finally arrived, and early indications show that he is more than ready to take over for the Tigers.
However, from an overall college football standpoint, is he ready to become a household name? For now, that’s the biggest question and the upcoming EA Sports College Football 25 cover athletes could end being a solid gauge of whether he’s hit that mark yet or not.
With that said, he has everything needed to at least be considered for one of the covers. He’s a fantastic leader with a cannon for an arm and is already being included in discussions for the Heisman Trophy, as well as the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Additionally, in an era of constant transfer portal, there’s something almost nostalgic about his willingness to stick with his home-state LSU football program. Having grown up as a product out of Lake Charles, LA, the purple and gold means something to him, and for many, that’s exactly what college football is about.
Despite having only one career start under his belt, the 6-foot-2, 205-pound signal caller has been surprisingly productive as a backup, having totaled 1,720 yards and 11 touchdowns compared to seven interceptions.
Junior OT Will Campbell
While a bit more unlikely as a potential cover athlete, veteran offensive tackle Will Campbell is a star in college football and certainly should have received at least some consideration as the face of the upcoming video game.
In two years with the purple and gold, the talented lineman out of Monroe, LA, has simply taken over the SEC and in turn, has the potential to be the next Tiger to go in the top-10 of the NFL Draft.
Notably, in his 1,687 total snaps with the purple and gold, he’s allowed just three total sacks, and hasn’t allowed even one in the last 15 games. Not only that, but he has leadership to go along with his talent, having been named a captain for the 2023 roster as a sophomore.
Important to remember is the fact that no offensive lineman has ever been selected as a cover athlete for the game formerly known as EA Sports NCAA Football. However, with that said, Will Campbell was recently selected as the first Tiger offensive lineman to ever receive the jersey No. 7 prior to this past season, so the 6-foot-6, 320-pound tackle is no stranger to firsts.
Junior LB Harold Perkins Jr
Finally, and possibly even more likely than quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is that of elite linebacker Harold Perkins Jr.
Since first stepping foot on campus in Baton Rouge back in 2022, the 6-foot-1, 220-pound defender out of New Orleans, LA, has experienced about as strong a spotlight as any in college football. In turn, it wouldn’t surprise in the slightest if the talented junior ended up being one of the few selected as a cover athlete for the EA Sports College Football 25 video game.
In just two years with the purple and gold, Perkins Jr has been incredibly productive, having recorded a total of 147 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 13 sacks, seven forced fumbles, nine pass deflections and two interceptions. In short, he does everything for his defense, and he’ll likely be expected to continue that trend into the upcoming 2024 season.
What’s even more impressive is the fact that he’s no stranger to the offensive side of the ball, having recorded a rushing touchdown in his most recent outing vs. Wisconsin in the 2024 ReliaQuest Bowl.
According to just about every report out there, the full reveal for the upcoming video game is set to be announced by the end of this month, with many expecting the final release date to fall somewhere around the middle of July. For now, we’ll be sure to keep a close eye out for any further updates as the highly anticipated game rapidly approaches.
