Coming off their national championship run during the 2022-23 season, all eyes are on coach Kim Mulkey and LSU women’s basketball. Heading into the 2023-24 season, the Tigers reign supreme, earning the No. 1 spot in the preseason AP poll.

LSU women’s basketball earns No. 1 ranking in 2023-24 preseason AP poll

This time, one full year ago, South Carolina was the talk of the town. It was deserved, too, as they would go undefeated through the 2022-23 season.

Oddly enough, the Tigers of LSU started unranked, coming in around 33 in last year’s preseason AP poll. However, they would win it all, beating Iowa in the national championship.

Heading into 2023-24, LSU women’s basketball isn’t sneaking up on anyone. According to this year’s preseason AP poll, coach Kim Mulkey and the Tigers are No. 1 and have a massive target on their backs.

The Lady Tigers received a total of 899 points, including 35 of 36 first-place votes. The next closest is UConn, which received 855 votes and one first-place vote.

There’s plenty of star power in Baton Rouge heading into this coming season. Whether it be returning forward Angel Reese, transfer forward Aneesah Morrow or true freshman Mikaylah Williams, the list goes on for what seems like forever.

Naturally, when you combine that kind of roster with the coaching ability of coach Kim Mulkey, it’s a safe bet that they’ll be pretty good.

Still, that No. 1 next to the LSU women’s basketball name doesn’t mean anything until the end of the season. There’s a long way until the postseason in March, and the Tigers will be tested all season.

The season opens for your Fighting Tigers on November 6, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. CST. The game will occur in Las Vegas, NV, as they face off against Colorado in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Series.
