With conference championship weekend having officially come to a close, LSU football can now begin preparation for bowl season, as they’ll get set to face off against Baylor on New Year’s Eve in the 2024 Texas Bowl.
LSU football to take on Baylor for 12th time in program history in the 2024 Texas Bowl
The last time LSU football faced off against Baylor in the sport of college football, the world looked a little bit different. Ronald Reagan was in the midst of his second Presidential term, a Blockbuster store had only just opened for the first time, and there were still five years remaining until Patrick Peterson was born. The year was 1985, and now, nearly 40 years later, the Tigers and Bears are set to face off for the 12th time in history.
With the 2024 regular season having officially come to a close, LSU football now sits with a record of 8-4 (5-3 SEC), meaning that this will be the first time since 2016 that a Brian Kelly led team has failed to reach at least 10 total wins in a year.
While it wasn’t exactly what the Tigers had hoped for their season, a win vs. a Power Four team always has a way of raising morale, and a victory over Baylor to conclude the season could do just that.
Coming off a 2023 season in which Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears managed just three wins in 12 games, expectations weren’t exactly high coming out of Waco, TX heading into the new year. Still, Aranda kept his team rallied, and the Bears not only won eight of their games, but almost found their way into the Big 12 Championship along the way.
In the long history of these two football programs, LSU and Baylor have somehow faced off just 11 total times, even despite being a short seven hour drive away from each other.
The first game between the two came all the way back in 1907 – which would begin a five-game win streak for the Tigers in this series, before Baylor would ultimately get their first win against the purple and gold in Baton Rouge in 1960. The purple and gold currently lead the series eight games to just three for Baylor.
The 2024 version will notably be just the third time the two programs have played each other within a bowl game, as Baylor won by a score of 14-7 in the 1963 Bluebonnet Bowl, and again 21-7 in the 1985 Liberty Bowl.
LSU football vs. Baylor will officially face off in the 2024 Texas Bowl on Tuesday, December 31, 2024 at 2:30 p.m. CT. The matchup will take place at NRG Stadium in Houston, TX, and will be available to watch live on ESPN.
