The future is bright for the Tiger backfield under coach Brian Kelly! One of the two stud first-years on roster is LSU football freshman running back Trey Holly. Earlier this week, the soon-to-be star spoke about what it was like to score his first touchdown in Tiger Stadium vs. Army.
LSU football freshman running back Trey Holly describes feeling after first collegiate touchdown
It was late in the evening of week eight, and LSU football was up big against Army. With a lead of 55-0, it looked likely that coach Brian Kelly and the Tigers would clear the bench and run the clock out.
While that may have been the plan, LSU football freshman running back had other goals in mind. The stud first-year took a handoff to the left with just 53 seconds remaining in the game. About 12 seconds later, he was 67 yards down the field in the endzone and celebrating his first collegiate touchdown.
“The thing I remember most is scoring my first touchdown. That was a dream come true to me,” Holly said earlier this week when asked about his experiences thus far in Tiger Stadium.
“That was amazing. That was my best touchdown of my career, even in high school. I always dreamed about playing in Death Valley, so it was like a dream come true to me,” he continued.
For many young football players growing up in Louisiana, playing a game in Tiger Stadium is what they spend most of their childhood dreaming of. Having grown up in Farmerville, LA, LSU football freshman running back getting a glimpse of the endzone was likely too good an opportunity to pass up.
Notably, despite having already been up big against Army, it was even more understandable when you consider the uncertainty at available snaps. In his two appearances, the freshman back has recorded just 10 carries for 110 yards and one touchdown.
Still, a lack of playing time is no shot at Holly. Heading into 2023, the Tigers had eight running backs on scholarship, including several seniors.
Holly is happy to wait his turn in a deep running back room
Eight scholarship running backs is essentially unheard of in today’s world of college football. However, because of this rare luxury, coach Brian Kelly and the Tigers had quite a challenge when it came to getting everyone a chance on the field.
However, LSU football freshman running back Trey Holly isn’t too worried about the lack of snaps. In fact, he appears happy he got on the field at all.
“Staying patient, being humble,” the first-year said. “It’s the seniors’ turn, so, me, I’m just waiting my turn, just following their footsteps. I mean, I’ve still got a lot to learn, no matter what. So, just being humble and staying patient.”
Furthermore, despite not getting much in-game experience, he’s learning plenty off the field in practice.
“From a leadership standpoint, Josh, Logan, and all our upperclassmen, they’re just showing me the way,” he said when asked about learning from his elders. “Each and every practice, I’m asking them questions. They’re right there explaining and asking me, ‘Did you get that? Did you get this?’
“Just learning the plays, the techniques, the standpoints, and all of that. Just being there with them, it’s a joy because they’re like my older brothers – mine and Kaleb’s older brothers sort of just teaching us.”
There’s little doubt Trey Holly will get his opportunity to make an impact for the Tigers; it’s just a matter of when. Keep an eye out for him going forward, as he’ll hope to get back into the endzone as soon as possible.
