Take a bow, coach Jay Johnson. After a rocky start to the transfer portal period, LSU baseball has been lights out of late, landing four commitments from immediate impact players, including right-handed pitcher Deven Sheerin who announced his decision yesterday.

Things were looking fairly rough early on. After falling in the Chapel Hill Regional against No. 4 North Carolina on June 3, LSU baseball pretty quickly took a few more heavy losses via the transfer portal, and some concern quickly started to build within the fanbase.

Some of the top names to elect to leave the program included speedy outfielder Paxton Kling, right-handed bullpen pitchers Sam Dutton and Aiden Moffett, and possibly most notably elite freshman left-handed pitcher Cam Johnson.

With all of that said, itā€™s becoming more and more clear that coach Jay Johnson likely had a plan all along, and itā€™s slowly beginning to come to fruition.

The first player to announce his commitment to the Tigers was that of USF right-handed relief pitcher Chandler Dorsey. At the time, it felt like a bit of a momentum shifter, but it now turns out that it was actually so much more.

As of today, Saturday, June 15, the program has now landed four transfer portal commitments in the last five days, with elite rising sophomore pitcher Deven Sheerin becoming the latest to join the group.

As a freshman at Mount St. Maryā€™s this past season, Deven Sheerin truly created a name for himself, and it was no surprise when he entered the portal to potentially land himself at a bigger school. Listed as a 6-foot-5, 245-pound right-handed pitcher out of Reading, PA, he has a big league body and the arm talent just continues to improve.

Over the course of 70.0 innings pitched in 2024, Sheerin logged a solid ERA of 4.76. With that said, what might be most impressive are his 109 strikeouts and 32 walks compared to just 49 allowed hits and 37 allowed runs.

With a college career-high 12 strikeouts in one appearance earlier this year, heā€™s a fantastic strike thrower, and figures to add an impressive fastball and slider with plenty of movement to the LSU baseball pitching rotation next season.

The biggest question surrounding the transfer portal addition is just how well he can translate to the SEC. The Pennsylvania product was a First-Team All-MAAC last season and undoubtedly has some of the best arm talent in college baseball. If he can manage to stay within himself and adjust as needed with the boost in competition, donā€™t be surprised to see the rising sophomore make some consistent appearances on the mound for the purple and gold.

Sheerin is now the fourth transfer portal commitment for coach Jay Johnson and the Tigers this cycle, joining fellow right-handed pitchers Zac Cowan (Wofford) and Chandler Dorsey (USF), as well as infielder Luis Hernandez (Indiana State).
