LSU coach Jay Johnson has been a busy man, and has most recently landed two more transfer portal pitcher commitments this offseason. Earlier today, it was reported that the top-two Wofford pitchers from the 2024 season – sophomore Zac Cowan and freshman Camden Wicker – will now make their way to Baton Rouge, LA, for the 2025 college baseball season.

Talented rising sophomore Camden Wicker reportedly commits to coach Jay Johnson and LSU baseball

It wasn’t long ago that Wofford right-handed pitcher Camden Wicker was facing off against LSU baseball in the Chapel Hill Regional.

Now, just a couple weeks later, the talented freshman out of Viera, FL, is reportedly committed to suit up for the purple and gold next season, as coach Jay Johnson landed his second transfer portal pitcher of the offseason, according to a report from D1Baseball.

During his first season of college baseball with the Terriers, the 6-foot-6, 180-pounder proved to be a solid starter and managed to earn the trust of his coaching staff fairly early on. Making his debut on February 18 vs. Towson, Wicker would go on to throw 75.2 innings, allowing 70 hits compared to 57 strikeouts during that span.

Notably, his final outing of the season actually came vs. the Tigers of LSU during the Chapel Hill Regional, as he went on to throw 4.0 innings, logging six strikeouts compared to seven hits and three earned runs. The purple and gold would eventually come out on top by a score of 13-6.

Wofford ace becomes third transfer portal pitcher to join Tigers this week

As if one high-potential Wofford pitcher wasn’t enough, coach Jay Johnson seemingly came away from the Chapel Hill Regional so impressed that he found himself interested in multiple former Terriers.

Not long after the initial reports about Wicker, former Wofford ace Zac Cowan decided to join in on the fun and create something of a package deal for coach Jay Johnson and the 2025 LSU baseball roster.

A 5-foot-11, 180-pound rising junior out of Blythewood, SC, Cowan was by far the most impressive pitcher on the 2024 Terrier roster, and is more than likely to walk into Baton Rouge, LA, as a weekend starter for the Tigers.

With a 10-2 record this past season, Zac Cowan logged an impressive 124 strikeouts, 29 walks and 3.35 ERA in a whopping 110 innings pitched, showing the ability to not only keep opposing offenses in check, but also do it over an extended period of time.

With today’s commitments from Wicker and Cowan, coach Jay Johnson has now landed four players out of the transfer portal this offseason to go along with five other junior college additions. Right-handed pitcher Chandler Dorsey out of USF was the first to make an announcement on Monday, while first baseman/catcher Luis Hernandez from Indiana State followed a similar suit on Tuesday.

Update: The reported commitment from rising sophomore right-handed pitcher Camden Wicker has since been removed by D1Baseball. As of today, June 12, 2024, the LSU baseball transfer portal class remains at three with senior first baseman/catcher Luis Hernandez (Indiana State) and sophomore right-handed pitchers Zac Cowan (Wofford) and Chandler Dorsey (USF).
