Having already possessed commitments from seven transfer portal players, LSU baseball added yet another big-time talent to their 2025 roster earlier today, as former Nicholls right-handed pitcher Jacob Mayers will now make his way to Baton Rouge.

Coach Jay Johnson and LSU baseball have completely rebuilt their pitching bullpen, and it’s full of big league arm talent.

Despite having already lost at least six pitchers in the offseason, the Tiger coaching staff appears to have made it their goal to create one of the deepest pitching staffs in all of college baseball, and it’s become pretty safe to say that they’ve largely accomplished it just a few weeks into the offseason.

The transfer portal cycle got off to a hot start with the addition of USF relief pitcher Chandler Dorsey, and that was only the start. They’ve since added five total pitchers through the portal, including Deven Sheerin (Mount Saint Mary’s), Luke Hayden (Indiana State), Zac Cowan (Wofford) and most recently, Jacob Mayers (Nicholls), who announced his decision earlier this afternoon.

In his two seasons with Nicholls, Mayers was about as good as any pitcher on their entire roster, logging a career record of 14-2 with a 3.26 ERA, having thrown 211 strikeouts and 134 walks in 146.1 innings pitched.

With a fantastic fastball and slider, the biggest thing holding the Gonzales, LA product back is the overall lack of a third pitch, as well as some inconsistencies as far as strike throwing is concerned.

While there are no guarantees when it comes to making the jump from Nicholls to LSU baseball, the 6-foot-5, 205-pound right-handed pitcher has an elite frame and if he’s able to build up consistency, there’s no reason that he shouldn’t be able to leave an impact for the Tigers during the weekends.

Mayers now joins an eight-man transfer portal class that includes five total pitchers, as well as infielder Luis Hernandez (Indiana State), outfielder Chris Stanfield (Auburn) and catcher Eddie Yamin IV (Dayton). The program also has commitments from five JUCO players, as left-handed pitcher Conner Ware, shortstop Tanner Reaves, infielder/outfielder Trevor Schmidt, outfielder Daniel Harden and catcher Blaise Priester are all expected to make their way to campus later this summer.
