Throughout the offseason, LSU football has implemented a weekly award to recognize those who’ve put in the work during practice. That award is given weekly to the “Freak of the Week.” The team took a break from the award last week but has returned to action, honoring class of 2021 punter Peyton Todd.

We’ve officially reached the fifth edition of the weekly “Freak of the Week” award. Three of the honorees have been defensive, with cornerback Laterrance Welch, edge rusher Ovie Oghoufo, and safety Matthew Langlois. The sole offensive honoree was quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, the likely future starting quarterback for the Tigers.

Now, special teams have found its first honoree, as backup punter Peyton Todd earned it this week.

Todd is heading into his redshirt sophomore season with the program. While he has yet to receive much in terms of playing time, his opportunity could be arriving rather quickly.

As the backup to Jay Bramblett, his lone in-game appearance was in 2022 versus Purdue in the Citrus Bowl. In addition to being a backup punter, he also serves as the backup holder for placekicks. He came in to hold for a point-after attempt in the Tigers’ 63-7 victory over the Boilermakers.

Todd’s time could be coming

While the backup punter position isn’t necessarily the most sought-after spot on a roster, it isn’t due to a lack of talent on Todd’s part. In the class of 2021, Peyton Todd was listed as the No. 1 punter in the country, according to both On3 and 247 Sports.

Keeping that in mind, the former class of 2021 punter could see his moment coming up very soon. Starting LSU football punter Jay Bramblett is a current 5th-year senior, meaning this is likely his final season of college football.

After that, it’s next man up, and that man is Todd.

Peyton Todd hasn’t had his moment to shine yet, but it is very much on the way. As long as he keeps working like he has, the future of LSU special teams is incredibly bright.
