While it’s unlikely coach Brian Kelly and LSU football place quite as strong an emphasis on the transfer portal this offseason compared to last, there are still several players they could pursue at select positions. One such player could be Notre Dame offensive lineman Joey Tanona, who is considering Purdue, among others.

As the 2024 season approaches, LSU football stands poised to boast one of the nation’s top offensive lines. With key returning players such as underclassmen Zalance Heard, Will Campbell, and Emery Jones Jr., the offensive line isn’t exactly an immediate position of need.

Still, it never hurts to gain some depth, especially in today’s version of college football where ball control is becoming more and more important.

One way to gain depth is through the transfer portal, and coach Brian Kelly could be doing exactly that, as reports indicate that the Tigers are emerging as a leading contender for former Notre Dame offensive lineman Joey Tanona..

In the class of 2022, Tonona, a 6-foot-5, 284-pound four-star recruit, opted to remain close to his hometown of Zionsville, IN, and enrolled at Notre Dame.

However, following an offseason car crash, the Notre Dame offensive lineman chose to medically retire in August 2022, ending his collegiate career before he had the chance to see it come to fruition. At least, that’s what it looked like at the time.

Now, heading into the 2024 season, it sounds as though he’s looking to make a return to the football field, having entered the transfer portal.

While Purdue emerged as an immediate front-runner, Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports later reported that the Tigers of Baton Rouge could emerge as a noteworthy team to monitor.

Before his medical retirement in 2022, Joey Tonona demonstrated remarkable potential, consistently pancaking defenders and creating lanes for ball carriers.

Without having played a single snap in college football, the former four-star recruit will have at least three years of eligibility. Keep an eye on this recruitment as coach Brian Kelly looks to bring him south to the Boot.
