While it’s never ideal to start out a college football season 0-1, the Tigers are nowhere near done yet in 2024, and LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier reemphasized his confidence in the roster immediately following Sunday’s matchup vs. USC.

Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier knows that LSU football is capable of more in 2024

When looking ahead to the 2024 LSU football season, many fans had their concerns about the program. Not only were they coming off a historically bad year defensively, but in losing Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Jayden Daniels, as well as star wide receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr, there was plenty of unknown on the offensive side of the ball as well.

At least, that’s how it was outside of the building.

Inside the program, everyone seemed to understand that there was going to be plenty of new in 2024, but with true senior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier stepping in as the starting signal caller, there wasn’t too much of a concern about where this year’s offensive production, and more importantly, leadership, was going to come from.

All offseason long, Nussmeier had an aura of confidence to him, particularly when discussing the roster around him. It was all business all offseason, and even despite Sunday’s loss against the USC Trojans, that confidence hasn’t wavered one bit.

“It’s a long season. We can’t get caught up in it. It sucks, obviously, but it is what it is,” the Tiger signal caller said Sunday evening while speaking with the media. “Twenty-four hour rule. We’ve got to watch the tape, get better and focus on Nicholls. We’ve got 11 more weeks to play, and then hopefully after that, but the focus right now is just to stick together.”

We’ve got a really good team, a really deep team. We’ve just got to play clean. I know we had opportunities to step on their throat, we had an opportunity to put the game away, and we didn’t do it. So, I think that’s the focus; just getting better and staying together.”

The Tigers fell by a score of 27-20 to USC, and in many ways struggled to keep a rhythm going throughout the second half. With that said, it wasn’t necessarily due to the star quarterback. He did his part, throwing the ball 38 times for 304 yards and two touchdowns, but he’ll be the first to tell you that he could have been better, especially after throwing an interception with just four seconds remaining in the ball game, ultimately sealing the victory for the Trojans.

“We have a good team. We do. I really believe that, and adversity makes you better, so as long as we can stick together and move in the right direction, I think that this is a learning experience that will only help us the rest of the season.”

While we’re yet to see how well this team can bounce back from their season starting loss vs. USC, there’s little doubt that the group is aware of just how long a college football season is, so it will be important to have a short memory as they look to prepare for week two. Luckily, with veterans like Garrett Nussmeier leading the pack, it feels like this team is well equipped to use this as motivation for the remainder of their year.

The 2024 LSU football team will return to the field this coming Saturday, September 7, 2024, against the Nicholls State Colonels in Baton Rouge, LA, which will be available to watch live on SEC Network at 6:30 p.m. CST.
