The first regular season AP Poll of the 2024 calendar year has officially been released, which notably included coach Brian Kelly and his LSU football squad within the top-20, even despite starting the season with a loss.

It was a tough weekend for the LSU football program, who faced a week one loss for the fifth season in a row, this year to coach Lincoln Riley and the USC Trojans in Las Vegas, NV.

While it certainly wasn’t the ideal start for the Tigers, it also wasn’t the end of the 2024 season for them. Thanks in large part to a recently expanded 12-team playoff, coach Brian Kelly and his squad are still very much in the running for an outside shot at the College Football Playoff, and could maybe even face a second loss without being eliminated.

Earlier today, the first regular season AP Poll was released, and so far, the media seems to have a similar feel for the program, as the purple and gold officially landed at No. 18 nationally.

Relatively unsurprisingly, the SEC once again dominated the rankings with eight teams included in the 25 team list, while Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, Auburn, Kentucky and Arkansas are each just on the outside looking in.

What’s possibly most notable is the fact that USC, formerly ranked No. 23 in the preseason, has essentially swapped places with LSU, finding themselves all the way up at No. 13 where the Tigers formerly sat just one week ago.

There’s plenty of football remaining for the purple and gold in 2024, but coach Brian Kelly will need to get his team ready as soon as possible if they want any hopes of rising back up into the College Football Playoff contender range before it’s too late.
