Nothing about the 2023 LSU football season has been ordinary. Particularly on offense, things have gone about as good as anyone could hope, and yet another record is in danger of being broken this weekend. With 2,858 yards over his career, LSU star wide receiver Malik Nabers is just 144 yards away from breaking the receiving record set by Josh Reed in 2001.
LSU star wide receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr are having career seasons
Quarterback Jayden Daniels is experiencing one of the best seasons in all of college football. In fact, he’s been so good that he’s up for the Heisman Trophy, an award annually given to the most outstanding player in the country.
However, it’s essential not to forget about the guys he’s throwing the ball to. Notably, both LSU star wide receiver Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr are having career seasons.
Through 11 games, Brian Thomas Jr sits third all-time in receiving touchdowns in a season with 14. Additionally, he’s moved his way up to sixth all-time in career receiving touchdowns.
On the other hand, LSU star wide receiver Malik Nabers has found the bulk of his success through yardage. In 2023, he’s recorded 1,424 receiving yards, landing him at No. 4 all-time for a single season.
As good as his season has been, it’s nowhere near as impressive as his career total, as he creeps closer to the career record set by Josh Reed in 2001.
Josh Reed and his receiving yard record are vulnerable heading into this weekend
After recording 1,740 receiving yards in 2001, LSU football legend Josh Reed officially set a new record for all-time career yards, with 3,009 over three seasons.
At the time, it looked like a record that wouldn’t be broken for years – and that would turn out to be exactly the case. Since he graduated, no one has come within 400 yards – until now.
As of today, November 23, 2023, Malik Nabers has totaled 2,858 receiving yards over his three seasons with the program. With one game remaining in the regular season, he’s 144 yards from breaking the all-time school record.
For most, 144 yards would be a career day. For Nabers, it’s just another day on the job. So far this season, the stud junior is averaging 129.5 receiving yards per game. If he can gain just 15 more yards than his season average, the record is very much within an arm’s reach.
With their game against Texas A&M rapidly approaching, all eyes will be on the Tiger passing game. Multiple players have a shot at awards, so expect them to air it out early and often.
