We’re still a few days out from the official transfer portal window, but that hasn’t stopped players from revealing their intentions to the world a bit early. Among said players includes former Kentucky wide receiver Barion Brown, who reportedly, for the LSU football program, could be a name to watch once the window gets started early next week.
LSU football could be a program to watch for talented Kentucky wide receiver Barion Brown
LSU football is officially up to at least 10 players expected to enter the 2025 transfer portal. While that number alone could be reason for concern, it becomes even more jarring when you realize that three of those 10 come from the wide receiver position.
Add in the fact that talented pass catchers Mason Taylor and Kyren Lacy are both likely headed to the NFL this offseason, and doesn’t take long to realize that the Tigers could be going through some serious rebuilding among their pass catchers.
Luckily for Brian Kelly and his football program, though, we also just so happen to find ourselves in the midst one of the most chaotic transfer portal eras college football has ever seen. In turn, if you’re one of the top name brands in the sport (which LSU is), the transfer portal giveth, and the transfer portal taketh away.
As far as who exactly will ultimately end up in the portal is yet to be seen, but players all throughout the country have begun leaking their intentions, so we at least have a slight idea of what to expect. Along with that, certain players haven’t exactly been shy about which programs they have their eyes on.
Current Kentucky wide receiver Barion Brown, for instance, is one such player, and he already has some programs very excited about the possibility of adding his talents to their 2025 roster. Notably, Brian Kelly and LSU are one of the early four contenders for the former high four-star wide receiver.
Officially listed as a 6-foot-1, 182-pound wide receiver out of Nashville, TN, Brown began his collegiate career with the Kentucky Wildcats, and spent the last three years of his life working as one of their top pass catchers.
In those three years, he proved to be a reliable target, and one that can be absolutely lethal in the open field, thanks in large part to his elite speed. More often than not, all he needs is a crease, and he’s more than a threat to take the ball all the way to the endzone.
As far as concerns go, production hasn’t been the most impressive of late. As a freshman in 2022, Barion Brown quickly became a name known throughout the country, as he racked up an eye-popping 50 receptions for 628 yards and four touchdowns, with a long of 70 yards. That stat line alone continues to have college football programs throughout the country simultaneously impressed and terrified, and is likely a reason why so many schools will likely reach out once the transfer portal officially opens on December 9.
The issue is that his productivity has only decreased since that impressive freshman year. In the last two years combined, he’s recorded just 72 receptions for 900 yards and seven touchdowns, with his worst year coming in 2024.
Still, declining production aside, the upside with a player like Brown simply cannot be overstated, especially for programs such as LSU who are desperately hoping to get back to their explosive ways on the offensive side of the ball. According to On3, Florida State, LSU, Ole Miss and Texas A&M could be the main teams to watch for the star pass catcher, but until he officially enters the portal, nothing is guaranteed.
The transfer portal officially opens on December 9, 2024, and will continue through December 28, 2024. From there, players will need to stick with their decisions until the spring window opens from April 16, 2025 through April 25, 2025.
