Winning 10 games last season, one of the top achievements from the LSU football program in 2023 came courtesy of quarterback Jayden Daniels, who went on to win the Heisman Trophy in fairly dominant fashion. Now, with Daniels getting ready for his rookie season in the NFL, all eyes are on Garrett Nussmeier, who’s not only been handed the starting job, but is already seeing his name pop up in several 2024 preseason award watch lists.

Coming off a season in which LSU football fans witnessed one of the best quarterback seasons in college football history, it’s only natural to wonder about what’s to come moving forward.

Redshirt junior Garrett Nussmeier has already been slotted as the man for the job in 2024, and to say that expectations are high would be an understatement. Just two seasons ago in his second year with the program, the Lake Charles, LA, product made a strong push for the starting job, which was ultimately won over by eventual Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels.

Now, having patiently waited for his opportunity, Nussmeier has finally received it, and fans wasted no time in discussing a possible back-to-back Heisman season.

Currently sitting with the eighth best odds in all of college football, it’s not unreasonable to at the very least think about the possibility from an outsider’s point of view. With that said, the Tiger signal caller appears to have his priorities elsewhere.

“I don’t really feel any pressure about it. I could care less if I win the Heisman or not. Really don’t care at all, to be honest with you,” the veteran signal caller said while speaking with the media. “I want to win a national championship; I want to lead LSU to the greatest stage possible. That’s all I care about.”

Since joining the purple and gold football program, Garrett Nussmeier has experienced a productive career as a whole, witnessing 26 wins in three years, throwing for 1,720 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions along the way.

Even better, the best game of his career was actually his most recent, having completed 68.9 percent of his passes while throwing for 395 yards and three touchdowns against a stout Wisconsin defense in the 2024 ReliaQuest Bowl.

Still, heading into the offseason, the one sentiment that keeps popping up around this team is the fact that 10 wins simply aren’t good enough anymore, and Nussmeier is hoping his team-first mentality can help them get to a much more impressive record by the time the season finishes up.

As of today, July 3, 2024, LSU football has the seventh best odds to come away as college football champions. With that said, a title isn’t even possible if they aren’t able to make the new 12-team College Football Playoff – something they would have just barely missed out on if it was the same format last season.

It all starts on September 1, vs. USC in the Vegas Kickoff Classic, and in the words of quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, “The LSU Tigers are comin to Vegas. That’s it.”
