Over the last few years, few programs have produced as many elite wide receivers as LSU. There are nine former Tigers currently in the NFL, and there could be even more following this season with stars like Malik Nabers. Heading into 2023, the LSU football wide receiver room is unsurprisingly elite yet again, and according to Pro Football Focus (PFF), they’re top 10 in college football.
The LSU football wide receiver room is ranked top 10 nationally, according to PFF
Last year, the LSU football wide receiver room was led by Kayshon Boutte and Malik Nabers. While Boutte is headed off to the NFL, having been drafted by the New England Patriots, Nabers is back and ready to take over college football.
Nabers isn’t the only stud wide receiver back in Baton Rouge for the 2023 season, though. Brian Thomas Jr and Kyren Lacy are two veteran receivers who have patiently awaited their opportunity to shine.
Now, that group is beginning to grab the attention of the national media. Yesterday, July 4, 2023, PFF released their list of top 10 wide receiver rooms in the country. LSU football fell to the No. 8 slot overall.
The LSU Tigers have a good mixture of known and unknown commodities
While this spot may seem low, there are plenty of top-tier wide receiver rooms in the country. There’s also lots to be discovered with this Tiger wide receiver room.
While Malik Nabers is as close to a guarantee as it gets. He led the team in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns last year. He even threw a touchdown in the Tigers’ bowl game versus Purdue.
However, that’s where the guarantees stop. While they have shown flashes, Brian Thomas Jr and Kyren Lacy haven’t had much opportunity to show what they can do. Still, they appear more likely to shine than not, especially considering their performances in the recent spring game.
One of the most impressive plays of the day came from Lacy. He made an unbelievable one-handed catch on a strike from quarterback Jayden Daniels en route to a 70+ yard touchdown.
In addition, the Tigers are bringing in quite a few new pieces to the room. Aaron Anderson, a transfer from Alabama, was elite in high school but didn’t get much opportunity in his freshman year with the Tide. Finally, the Tigers bring in true freshmen Jalen Brown and Shelton Sampson Jr into the team.
While both freshmen were highly touted recruits, it’s difficult to know what you’ll get from a player until you see him compete at the college level.
No matter their preseason ranking, this LSU football wide receiver room can match up with just about anyone in the country. It should be plenty of fun to watch them compete all season long.
