With less than 24 hours remaining until the 2024 week two matchup of LSU football vs. Nicholls, here are three Colonels that Tiger fans should keep a close eye on throughout Saturday evening.

LSU football vs. Nicholls: Three players to know on the 2024 Colonels roster

1. RB Collin Guggenheim

When talking about Nicholls State football and what it could be during the 2024 season, it would simply be wrong to not at the very least bring up veteran running back Collin Guggenheim.

A 5-foot-11, 205-pound converted quarterback entering his 5th-year season, Guggenheim has quickly turned himself into the heartbeat of this Nicholls team and has the potential to break a game open at any moment.

While he’s not exactly a dominant player from a speed and elusiveness standpoint, he is the true definition of a powerback and brings a passing element that requires opposing defenses to stay on their toes in the chance of a trick play or two.

In 2023, Guggenheim found his way to 178 total carries for 833 yards and 11 touchdowns, while completing two out of his three passes for five yards and a touchdown.

While it’s still early in the season, the talented running back has already carried the ball 18 times for 79 yards and looks more than ready to leave his mark on this weekend’s week two matchup vs. the purple and gold.

2. LB Eli Ennis

Despite entering just his third year of college football, linebacker Eli Ennis is already starting to look like a star at the FCS level, putting up some serious numbers just last week vs. FBS opponent Louisiana Tech.

Standing at 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, Ennis isn’t exactly an athletic freak, but what he does bring to the table is some fantastic football IQ that constantly puts offenses in tough situations.

In week one, Ennis was an absolute menace for the Bulldog offense, recording 10 tackles and an interception, which already has him on pace to set career highs in both statistical groups by a significant margin.

Over the course of his young career, Ennis has totaled 101 tackles, five passes defended, 3.5 sacks, one forced fumble and an interception. He’s capable of impacting the game at all three levels of a defense, and the reigning Southland Defensive Player of the Week will more than likely be looking to carry that momentum over to Baton Rouge in Tiger Stadium.

3. WR Quincy Brown

As far as matchup nightmares go at the FCS level, Nicholls wide receiver Quincy Brown is about as perfect an example as you’ll likely ever find.

A former TCU transfer who made his way over to Thibodaux, LA last year for his junior season, Brown stands at an imposing 6-foot-4, 210 pounds and is by far one of the most threatening playmakers on his entire team.

Having recorded just 44 receptions for 453 yards and five touchdowns over the last three seasons combined, the Saint Rose, LA, product struggled to find his footing early on, but already, it appears that 2024 is his year.

Last week vs. the Bulldogs of Louisiana Tech, Brown recorded four receptions for 70 yards and a touchdown. In short, he’s quickly set himself up for a potential career season, and heading into Tiger Stadium and scoring a touchdown would only be icing on the cake for the true senior.

Don’t be surprised to see the LSU defense keep an extra defender on the Nicholls pass catcher throughout Saturday. While he likely won’t pose as significant a challenge as some of the upcoming wide receivers they’ll face in the SEC, he certainly has the potential to make this a closer game than most fans would like to see in the week two matchup.

The 2024 LSU football team will return to the field this coming Saturday, September 7, 2024, against the Nicholls State Colonels in Baton Rouge, LA, which will be available to watch live on ESPN+/SECN+ at 6:30 p.m. CST.
