The LSU football transfer portal is officially open for business, and as of this morning, unsurprisingly, thereâs already been plenty of movement. For the Tigers, some of their early moves have included getting in contact with quarterback MJ Morris, formerly with NC State.
LSU football transfer portal: Tigers in contact with former NC State quarterback MJ Morris
Itâs day one of the transfer portal, and unsurprisingly, coach Brian Kelly and LSU football have already made their intentions clear. Last season, the Tigers took in double-digit players out of the portal, and while they likely wonât take quite as many this year, we could still see quite a bit of movement.
Despite the early nature of the cycle, it sounds as though the program has been in contact with several top prospects, including former NC State quarterback MJ Morris.
The former three-star recruit joined 247Sports this afternoon for their âTransfer Portal Palooza,â and spoke a bit about who heâs currently speaking with as potential landing options.
âOf course this the portal just now officially opened today, so this is really the day Iâve been able to talk to some different schools, but LSU has reached out just showing some interest. Baylor, Maryland and thatâs just this morning.â
According to 247Sports, the 6-foot-2, 205-pound quarterback out of Carrollton, GA, came out of high school as a three-star recruit in the class of 2021. Now, in 2023, he once again sits as a three-star, ranking among the top-20 out of transfer quarterbacks.
No bad blood between Morris and NC State
It wasnât too long ago that the transfer portal was much more of a frowned upon process, and in general, it meant that there might have been some bad blood between the player and program.
However, in our current era of college football, itâs become much more of a business, meaning that hundreds of players enter the portal each year.
When it comes to MJ Morris and the NC State program, itâs encouraging to note that there appears to be little to no bad blood between the pair. While speaking with 247Sports, he talked about the process of entering the portal and what his conversation looked like with his coaches.
âWe had a talk, (the coaches) didnât know if I was going to transfer or not,â the former Wolfpack quarterback explained. âLike I said, I still donât want to leave, I want to be here. And then a week later we had another talk, they called me to the office. It was mutual.
âWe didnât leave on any bad blood. I still have good relationships with all them. We left on good terms. They just told me that they wanted to take different ways, go get a different quarterback, go get a starting quarterback.â
Morris first made the decision to transfer last week following the conclusion of the regular season. He enters the portal with three years of eligibility remaining.
In his two seasons with NC State, Morris threw the ball 199 times for 1,367 yards, 14 touchdowns and six interceptions.
