There’s a give and take in our current state of college football, particularly as it pertains to the transfer portal. Today, it took away from coach Brian Kelly and the Tigers as LSU football sophomore cornerback Laterrance Welch has entered the transfer portal.

And just like that, an incredibly thin defensive back room becomes thinner.

By the end of the 2023 regular season, coach Brian Kelly was essentially grasping at straws trying to find a healthy cornerback to put out on the field. In turn, this meant that several freshman ended up starting against some of the best competition the SEC has to offer.

Unfortunately, as things stand, it doesn’t appear that things will be getting too much easier in 2024, as LSU football sophomore cornerback Laterrance Welch has entered the transfer portal.

Welch, a 6-foot-1, 193-pound defensive back hailing from Lafayette, LA, undeniably possesses the potential to make a collegiate-level impact. For whatever reason, though, it just wasn’t meant to be as a Tiger.

Coming out of high school in the class of 2022, Welch was ranked among the nation’s best, coming in at No. 156 nationally and No. 12 in Louisiana.

Nevertheless, the anticipated potential did not materialize into significant playing time in either of his first two seasons with the program, ending his tenure with just 14 tackles and two passes defended.

With this transfer portal loss, it will be interesting to see what coach Brian Kelly does as his next move. The Tigers brought in 11 new defensive backs in the class of 2023.

It’s unlikely they’ll bring in quite that many in 2024, but it certainly wouldn’t surprise to see the Tiger head coach look for some extra depth through the portal over the coming month.
