No position on the LSU football roster has more question marks than defensive back. Coach Brian Kelly is well aware of that, and he more than addressed it through the transfer portal. The Tigers picked up five defensive backs in the transfer portal. One of said defensive backs ranks among the best in college football, withĀ LSU football transfer commitĀ Denver Harris coming in at No. 2 overall.
LSU football transfer commit Denver Harris received a major boost in latest transfer portal rankings
Regarding LSU football cornerbacks, the Tigers brought back just one player. Laterrance Welch was a part of the class of 2022 and will certainly be looking for a breakout sophomore season in 2023.
While Welch has the potential to become a stud over the next couple of seasons, he needs more experience, and heās only one player. Cornerback is the kind of position where you need depth. Thatās precisely where this yearās transfer portal class comes in.
The Tigers picked up five defensive backs in the portal, and one of those five is one of the best in the country. Denver Harris is heading into his sophomore season and has serious potential. On Wednesday, his ranking was boosted, as heās now listed as the No. 2 player in the entire transfer portal for college football.
Harris, who was previously a part of Texas A&Mās historic 2022 recruiting class, was listed as the No. 45 player in the country. He was also the No. 7 cornerback and the No. 8 player in Texas according to 247 Sports.
Despite off-field issues, Brian Kelly is excited to have him on the team
Weāve seen it time and time again. A young kid has all of the talent in the world, but at the end of the day, he canāt help but get in his own way off the field. For a time this past season, it looked like this could be a possibility for Denver Harris.
Fortunately for him, coach Brian Kelly and LSU football were willing to take a chance. Heād faced multiple suspensions and had even been seen recklessly driving through a parking garage.
Kelly knew the risk in taking a player like Harris in the transfer portal, but he didnāt shy away. He did his due diligence and met with him in person multiple times before deciding whether the Tigers would take him.
Early on, it sounds like things are going smoothly, and Brian Kelly has confidence in him as a player and a man.
āHeās done well early on and he has no choice. He has to make it,ā Kelly explained. āHereās a guy that has been given a second chance. We feel like that with the circumstances of culture being strong here and him knowing that this is really his last chance at an SEC opportunity that is worth the risk. So far, itās been good.ā
If Harris can stay out of his own way and stick to the game he loves, thereās no reason for him not to succeed. Coach Kelly is one of the most experienced coaches in college football. Only time will tell, but early signs point to this turning into a match made in heaven.
