In a portion of the season where LSU football desperately needs something to go their way, the Tigers will look for a spark in the form of a new uniform combination, as they’ll break out the rarely seen gold jerseys this Saturday against Vanderbilt.
LSU football to break out rarely utilized gold jerseys in matchup against Vanderbilt
Well, something certainly needed to change, and it appears that the LSU football program took that to heart.
The Tigers have come to be known for their many potential uniform combinations over the last few seasons, and according to the official Twitter page for the purple and gold, they’ll be breaking out one of the more rare options this weekend against the Vanderbilt Commodores.
Having worn the gold jerseys just four times in the storied history of LSU football, Tiger fans – especially the younger ones – are going to be in for a treat Saturday.
The jersey style was first introduced as an option during the 1996 season under at the time head coach Gerry DiNardo, and to say it was a successful debut would be an understatement. The Tigers would come away with a 35-0 victory over Vanderbilt in the midst of what would end up being a 10-2 overall season for the program.
From there, we’ve only season the gold jersey three other times, coming in 1997 against Notre Dame in the Independence Bowl, at Florida in 1998, and most recently in 2016 against Mississippi State. The program is 3-1 while wearing the gold tops.
LSU football has not yet announced the remainder of the uniform combination for this weekend, but in 2016, we at the very least saw the Tigers match it up with a white helmet and white pants.
With a 6-4 overall record (3-3 SEC), the Tigers are now battling for pride, more than anything else, as both an SEC Championship, and potential College Football Playoff berth feel like distant dreams following the latest loss against Florida in Gainesville. Vanderbilt, on the other hand, is having one of the best seasons in recent memory (6-4, 3-3 SEC).
While the purple and gold likely still have a significant advantage as far as overall talent goes in this one, it’s ultimately up to them on where their mental state is at. Whether the new gold uniform add any spark to this roster is yet to be seen, but there’s little doubt that adding another win to the victory column would be abundantly welcome throughout that building as the regular season rapidly comes to a close.
LSU football vs. Vanderbilt will officially kickoff this Saturday, November 23, 2024 at 6:45 p.m. CT. The matchup is set to take place in Tiger Stadium, Baton Rouge, LA, and will be available to watch live on SEC Network.
