The wait may finally be approaching its end. Since losing offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock to Notre Dame prior to their bowl game, the Tigers have technically been without a true offensive coordinator for over a month now. Today, however, it was reported that LSU is expected to promote within and make Joe Sloan and Cortez Hankton co-offensive coordinators for the 2024 season.

LSU expected to promote from within and run with co-offensive coordinators in 2024

In many ways, the LSU vs. Wisconsin matchup on New Year’s Day felt like a job interview of sorts for the offensive coordinator position. Mike Denbrock had recently left the program for Notre Dame, and that meant it was time for quarterbacks coach Joe Sloan and wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton to take the reigns for a day.

As it turns out, they may have passed the test in the eyes of coach Brian Kelly. Today, Matt Zenitz of 247Sports reported that the Tigers are expected to promote the pair and make them co-offensive coordinators for the 2024 season.

Both excelled in their assistant positions throughout the 2023 season. Sloan helped to produce Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels, while Hankton played a major role in grooming Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr into potential first round picks for the upcoming draft.

While there’s no denying their ability as positional coaches, serving as co-offensive coordinators is another animal. Still, if the ReliaQuest Bowl matchup vs. Wisconsin was any indication, they should fit the bill.

Paired up against an excellent Badger defense, the Tigers put up 35 points to go along with their 492 total yards of offense. Interestingly enough, they were even able to get Harold Perkins Jr a rushing touchdown early on.

While one game doesn’t necessarily tell the entire story, it was certainly a good sign for the future. If coach Brian Kelly and LSU ends up following through with these expectations, it’s pretty safe to say that the Tiger offense will be in good hands.
