On July 26, LSU football recruiting received its sixth defensive back commitment in the class of 2024. At the time, it looked like the Tigers were just about set at the position. However, things might be trending in another direction, as LSU is a finalist for five-star cornerback Kobe Black.

Since his arrival in Baton Rouge, Coach Brian Kelly has made considerable strides in recruiting the defensive back position. His cornerback and safety positions were essentially decimated from the moment he stepped on campus, but that’s the case no more.

In just three recruiting classes, Kelly has brought in 10 transfers and 15 recruiting commits at the position. However, even with that added depth, the Tigers aren’t done yet.

Just yesterday, LSU football was named a finalist for another top cornerback target: five-star Kobe Black.

The class of 2024 cornerback is the No. 26 player nationally and the No. 2 cornerback, according to 247 Sports. Furthermore, the five-star stands at 6-foot, 190 pounds and possesses incredible speed. In fact, he was clocked running as fast as 21.7 MPH on the football field, according to VNN Sports on Twitter.

Along with the Tigers, Black is considering Oregon, Texas, Ohio State and Texas A&M as his finalists. Texas has long been considered the favorite.

While LSU isn’t necessarily viewed as one of his top options, being named a finalist is a significant step. If coach Brian Kelly can land a commitment from Black, it would give the Tigers a fifth cornerback commitment in what would be one of the best defensive back groups in the class of 2024.
