In the class of 2023, coach Brian Kelly made it clear that he wants the best in Louisiana to stay in-state and play for LSU football. Of the 14 players he brought out of the transfer portal, six were originally from the Boot, many of whom had gone elsewhere for their original college. Now, heading into the class of 2024, he has a chance to continue this trend as Mississippi State wide receiver Jacoby Bellazar announces his decision to transfer.
Mississippi State wide receiver Jacoby Bellazar enters the transfer portal
After a largely disappointing 2023 season thus far, Bulldog head coach Zach Arnett was fired earlier this week. While not particularly surprising, the decision opened the door for potential turnover as players decide on their future home.
One player who decided to look for a change of scenery was Mississippi State wide receiver Jacoby Bellazar. The junior spent just one season playing for the Bulldogs, but with the uncertainty at head coach, his decision doesn’t come as too much of a surprise.
The Baton Rouge, LA, native began his college football career with Southwest Mississippi Community College in junior college. However, after two seasons with the Bears, he decided to take his talents to the next level, and Arnett was willing to take a chance on him.
Unfortunately, this didn’t lead to much playing time with the Bulldogs. He saw just one reception in 2023 against Southeastern Louisiana, logging 13 yards on the season.
While he doesn’t have much game tape at the SEC level, he has solid speed and could provide depth for an LSU football team that could lose multiple wide receivers to the NFL after this season.
Furthermore, according to 247Sports, Bellazar was the No. 57 JUCO recruit in the class of 2023, showing that the potential is there. If coach Brian Kelly elects to go to the transfer portal for an extra wide receiver this offseason, the former Mississippi State wide receiver could be a name to keep an eye on.
