Every year, a select few true freshmen come out swinging in their first collegiate season. According to 247 SportsLSU football might have a couple of those freshmen this coming season. The network released a list of 100 freshmen who could leave an impact, and class of 2023 edge rusher Dashawn Womack was one of its top players.

LSU football freshman edge Dashawn Womack has big expectations heading into 2023

Last year, LSU football had several freshmen leave an immediate impact in coach Brian Kelly’s inaugural season. Guys like tight end Mason Taylor, linebacker Harold Perkins Jr and offensive tackle Will Campbell excelled throughout the year.

Now, class of 2023 edge rusher Dashawn Womack could be next in line. 247 Sports appears to agree, as Chris Hummer included him in his list of “100 true freshmen who will impact the 2023 college football season.”

Here is what Hummer had to say regarding expectations for the freshman:

“Womack missed the majority of spring practice with an injury, but those around the Tigers program are still bullish about his potential to help the team in 2023. The Tigers have far more depth off the edge in June than they did when Womack signed in December, but he’s still expected to be a contributor right away for a defensive unit that lacks a standout edge to pair with the aforementioned Perkins. Expect the 6-foot-5, 266-pound Womack to provide plenty of pressure this year.”

Womack has the makings to be a star

Womack, listed as the No. 26 overall prospect in the class of 2023, could be elite this coming season for the Tigers. The 6-foot-5, 266-pound prospect has the size and speed needed to be a star at this level.

Having been clocked sub-4.8 in the 40-yard dash, he has elite speed for someone his size. Combine that with his ability to bend at the hip and slip past offensive tackles, and you’ve got a one-man wrecking ball.

While his size could allow him to slide inside as a defensive lineman, he projects more as an edge rusher at the college level. In fact, he could be the perfect player to set opposite Harold Perkins Jr, creating an almost impossible-to-stop pass rush.

Womack has been nursing an injury most of the offseason, so it’s hard to gauge just how good to go he’ll be. Still, he has the talent to be a star.

Watch out if he can return to health in time for the season and truly get a feel for the college level. The Tigers project to have one of the best defensive lines in college football this season. If he stays healthy, he could be a significant part of it.
