The hot streak continues! Just when we thought the LSU football recruiting class of 2023 was complete, coach Brian Kelly proved us all wrong. Yesterday evening, June 17, the Tigers picked up a major commitment from junior college tight end/offensive tackle Connor Gilbreath.
LSU football found a hidden gem in class of 2023 tight end/offensive tackle Connor Gilbreath
Now, it appears the LSU football team has solidified their recruiting class of 2023. Yesterday evening, the Tigers received their 25th recruiting commitment in the form of junior college tight end Connor Gilbreath.
Gilbreath spent the last year at Butte College in Oroville, CA. While he’s officially listed as an offensive tackle, according to 247 Sports, his height, weight and speed more than translates to the tight end position in Division I football.
Coming out of high school, he was officially unranked with zero stars. That didn’t steer people away, though, as he had offers from several of the most recognized programs in Division I.
With offers from programs such as Arizona, Colorado, Miami and Mississippi State, this was a major recruiting victory for coach Kelly.
Gilbreath could pair perfectly with tight end Mason Taylor
LSU football already has one of the best tight ends in the country. Mason Taylor showed up in a big way for the Tigers in his freshman season in 2022. Naturally, big expectations surround the tight end room in Baton Rouge heading into 2023.
This begs the question, where does class of 2023 tight end commit Connor Gilbreath fit into the equation? Luckily for Gilbreath, outside of Taylor, there’s minimal experience at the position.
Don’t get me wrong; there’s plenty of talent in the room, including multiple four-star commits from the class of 2023. Still, with all of that inexperience, there’s plenty of opportunity for Connor Gilbreath to make an early impact.
Gilbreath stands at 6-foot-6, 255 pounds, so he has the size to be an elite blocking tight end. Add in the fact that he has experience at offensive tackle, and it’s almost too good to be true.
The combination of Mason Taylor and Connor Gilbreath could be elite. With Taylor’s exceptional receiving ability and Gilbreath’s experience at blocking – it’s a dangerous combo.
Gilbreath has the disadvantage of having a late commitment, but if he can learn the playbook quickly, he has every opportunity to see the field early and often.
Whether this new tight end commitment pays off now or in the future is yet to be seen. Still, coach Brian Kelly found himself a gem, and he’s sure to be happy with how his tight end room looks heading into 2023.
