In the midst of his second year with the program, a big-time rebuild is well under way for coach Matt McMahon and LSU basketball. While there’s plenty of work yet to be done, McMahon is gaining respect by the day, and recruiting appears to be following suit. Earlier this week, class of 2025 recruit Tyler Jackson named the Tiger head coach as someone who’s been pushing the hardest for his talents.

After winning just two SEC games in 2022-23 and finishing last in the conference, LSU basketball was at an all-time low through one year under coach Matt McMahon. However, the former Murray State head coach knew this was going to be a multi-year rebuild, and if 2023-24 is any indication, he’s making a strong case for his ability to make it work.

Through 19 games, the Tigers have shown significant improvement from last season’s 14 win showing. So far this season, the team already has three conference wins to go along with 11 total.

While they’re still towards the bottom half of the conference for the time being, the improvement can’t be overlooked. Notably, recruits are beginning to take notice as well.

Earlier this week, four-star class of 2025 recruit Tyler Jackson outlined the top schools recruiting him, and right up near the top of the list was coach Matt McMahon and LSU basketball.

Ranking as the No. 28 player nationally, according to the On3 Industry rankings, as well as No. 4 in the state of Georgia, few players in his recruiting cycle are viewed in quite as high a regard.

Standing at 6-foot-2, 152 pounds, Jackson is technically listed as a combo guard. While he undoubtedly has the passing ability to be a primary point guard, his knack for creating shots for himself and scoring practically at will lends to more of a shooting guard future.

Along with coach Matt McMahon, and the Tigers, the Baltimore, MD, product is receiving big-time attention from Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Ole Miss, Penn State, Syracuse and UCF.
