It was a fantastic week for Tiger baseball as a whole. Not only did the team win three out of their four games – including two over No. 1 Texas A&M – but they also saw some individual honors, as LSU baseball freshman Steven Milam was named SEC Freshman of the Week.

LSU baseball freshman receives SEC honor after stellar performances over the week

LSU baseball freshman Steven Milam stood out from the moment he first stepped foot on the diamond this season, but it’s becoming more and more clear every week that the best is yet to come.

Officially listed as a 5-foot-8, 172-pound infielder out of Las Cruces, NM, Milam wasted no time in making an impact on the 2024 Tiger roster, as he first made his purple and gold debut vs. Central Arkansas in the second game of the season.

Since then, he’s proven to be a staple in the lineup, thanks in large part to his consistency, ability to switch-hit and willingness to put his body on the line on defense. Still, even with his impressive play all season long, this past week very well might have consisted of some of his best work yet, most recently being named SEC Freshman of the Week.

Highlighted by a two hit, one walk, four putout and three assist outing vs. Texas A&M in game one on Friday, the talented first-year played a massive role in what would end up being the Tigers’ third-straight series win in SEC play.

In total, the impressive infielder recorded a .538 on-base percentage, which included four total hits, two doubles and three walks to go along with his three runs in four games.

After a rough start to in-conference play, LSU baseball was in desperate need of some positive momentum, and after three series wins in a row over Missouri, Auburn and now Texas A&M, that’s exactly what they got. Notably, with three freshmen receiving consistent playing time – including Milam, outfielder Ashton Larson and Louisiana product Jake Brown – it was only natural that things would take some time to work. It was just a question of whether they could find their rhythm fast enough to make the postseason.

While there are no guarantees, their series win over the Aggies this past weekend was a massive resume builder, and very well could have given them all the hope they needed with just two weeks remaining until the SEC Tournament.

Steven Milam and the Tigers will next return to the diamond tomorrow, May 7, against Northwestern State in Alex Box Stadium at 6:30 p.m. CST. From there, they’ll have just six more games to show what they’re capable of as they’ll take on Alabama in Tuscaloosa and Ole Miss in Baton Rouge to end the regular season.
